I would love a defender. I am looking to make one for a camper conversion kinda. I am a mountain biker and climber. I also currently work from home mostly as an apprentice. This means I could live out of a landrover and travel about abit :). Here is the hard part, I have always wanted a defender and I am in the process of looking to purchase one. But they are so damn expensive ughh, any advice? is a disco any good also?

Welcome.
Here's the bad news, buying a Defender will be the cheapest part of your purchase.
Cut your teeth on an early D1 or D2 and enjoy.

Hi and welcome!

Defenders are commanding high prices. A cheaper alternative would be a disco 1 or 2, which are better for day to day driving in comfort terms. And you can lie down in the back of a disco better than a 90 or put a roof tent on, as mentioned.

To sleep in, disco all day long
To drive, disco all day long
For comfort, disco all day long
Decent radio that you can actually hear, disco all day long
Heating that actually bloody works, disco all day long
Pretending you are macho, and to impress the neighbours a defender all day long!

I have seen the prices of defenders and I know you are gonna say no comfort and all. But how about a series 3, they are no where near as expensive and are cheaper to insure and stuff I'm 19 insurance pain. Also no tax and mot and they are so cool. What other disadvantages?

Welcome to LZ. :)

Series are quite primitive, harsh bouncy ride, noisy, they are cool all right, in fact it is freezing in the winter! :D
And they only have 4 gears, plus the transfer box, no power steering, and are quite slow by modern standards.

But some late Series 3s are still not historic vehicles, so in fact one of those would probably be quite a sensible buy, so long as you don't mind 1940s style motoring. The petrol engines are better than the diesels.

Can be rustier than a defender but can be easy to maintain.

What engines are best?

Another question is ex mod, I have seen a few ex mod landys for a decent price but they have the 2.5 na which I have heard bad things about especially with a load on? Anything else to look out for?

Nothing wrong with 2.5NA, except they have a belt driving the camshaft, which needs regular changing.

Personally, I never have anything to do with MOD stuff, because I think it tends to be overpriced and sometimes abused.
But if you like that sort of thing, it is an option.

The diesels are way more common, what's the problem with them?
Just not very good. They are a dieselized petrol engine, which was modded a bit over the years to produce more power.

They only ever sold well in the UK, due to high fuel prices. A petrol engine is really better for light vehicles, better power to weight ratio.
Diesels are good in trucks, trains, and ships.

Noisier than a petrol....
Well it’s a landrover anything is going to be noisy.
I would say sit in 1 and see what they are like. If you mountain climb you will have the arm strength but what about after a long day hanging off them?

we have done lands end to John o groats & regular trips round France & enjoy the basics.
