hi chaps, i have searched but cant find the info !
I have twin glass sunroofs, both leak badly, i have removed, dried & siliconed the front one & its better but still leaks, the rear has been removed, i cleaned all the crud off the seals & refitted it - leaks really bad as always - my kids are fed up with getting soaking wet - as am i !
Has anyone come up with a solution to this as its driving me cuckoo - tried my local land rover dealer and they told me the seals were no longer available but im concerned that they thought i was asking for seals for a factory fitted tilt & slide roof and tbh they werent that helpfull.
Im desperate to get this sorted, is there a universal seal i could buy maybe ?
any help hugely appreciated as its far too cold now for my kids to get soaked by freezing water constantly & the missus wont stop moaning ! - tempted to rip them out & rivet & seal a plate over
im that fed up with it !
please help - someone must of come up with a solution by now

if i had a welder i would - but id just make a big mess lol
guess theres no discos out there with glass roofs that dont leak then - gotta love these landies - someone must have seals for them somewhere ????

They all seem to leak... its an age thing; mine pours through the interior light... it's a bit like trying to find a series that doesn't drip oil, or a gaylander wiff it's doors on.

mine are tilt only with no winder unlike the one in the linky but they have landrover on the circular winder handle should still help tho cheers

While you've got the headlining out, it's worth removing & re-sealing the roof rail.
They leak there too.
Also while its out check the Alpine windows, another known leak spot.
Silaflex, a marine silicone, seems to be the prefered product.

As mentioned above it is worth doing the roof bars and especially the alpine windows as thease can leak without any noticeable clues other than a wet boot carpet. This then leads to a rotten boot floor.

For sunroofs it is purely a breakdown of sealant over a period of time, either between the sunroof and outer skin of the vehicle or indeed, more commonly, the drain pipe and connector.

I had a D2 which was garaged all it's life, only covered 50k and it still had a leaky roof. That's why when I was looking for a permanent discovery that I was going to keep for good, I choose an early 200 with no sunroofs, roof bars, electric windows, air conditioning, electric gubings unr the bonnet. Hence I have no hassle.

Good luck with the roofs and let us know how you get on.

Offroadmad,

Fink you should mention yours is an early Disco 1 and has a twisty nob to operate the S/roof and DOES NOT SLIDE so does not have rails.

I have sealed mine with Duct tape in summer after siliconing them up stops the dripping and plan to have a looksee under the headlining at some point.

Think DN has hit the nail on the head it is an age thing but if I discover the secret I will pass it on.

Only problem I have now is that condensation gathers on the glass and that drips me instead:doh:

I know that one well lol - hard to work out if its condensation or leaks half the time !
sure il get there in the end somehow. im amazed there isent someone out there making seals of a similar type ( as im convinced that is all mine need to cure it ) - going to do some research & see what i come up with !
I think if i removed the roofs ( will have to be done when dry as i have no garage )
put a bead of silicone around the edge of the glass ( where the glass meets with the seal ) & hopefully if i can get an even bead - leave for 24 hrs to go off - this should in theory create another rubber seal, if i cant find replacement seals thats what im going to try

Your early sun-rooves SOUND like the old after-market ones that seal to the roof skin rather than having a tray that seals to the under-side of the roof panel and has drain tubes. If so the leak could be past this seal rather than past the glass seal.
Once I got my Alpines sealed and the rear end dry the condensation stopped.

ORM,

I siliconed mine directly around the glass first but direct sunlight shrunk the silicone quite quickly and the rain found its way through so i siliconed let it dry then duct taped it all the way across from glass to body, thus covering the seal completely. am hoping to get the rooflining off in summer to see where on the s/roof the seal has failed.

have seen sunroof seal sold by length on ebay but dont know if it is compatible.

Having debated getting a Land Rover for a while I dove in and bought myself a '97 Discovery 300TDi 3 weeks ago.
I've been reading this & other Landy sites so pretty much knew what I was letting myself in for. Sure enough the one I got leaked from the front sunroof so I followed the instructions as linked on page one & it was very straight forward, I removed both sunroofs (or is that sunrooves) siliconed them back in, siliconed the drain channel, I found the plastic tubing was blocked on the drivers side which was easily sorted by connecting a hand pump to the tube and blowing some air through. I decided to use jubilee clips on the plastic tubing to the drain channels (it can't hurt)
The rear one hadn't leaked but as the headlining was out why not do both?

Anyone wondering if they should bother I'd say do it,allow a day to whip everything out, seal it all up and leave them for a few days of rain to make sure you haven't missed anything and then a couple of hours to pop the headlining & fittings back in.

Having restored a couple of bikes and having an MG Midget to tinker with I read a few owners web sites & have got to say this is one of the most informative.

Keep up the good work.
