Just had a really good poke around in the ****ing down rain to try find this water leak on the P38. It's
dripping (one ever 30 secs or so) from behind the alternator/pumps mounting bracket. Whilst I can't sure,
I think it's coming from the head gasket??? It's not overheating, no water in oil or vice versa. There
doesn't look to be anything else with water in it around that area?

The coolant looks clean & the oil is very clean. Is there anything else it can be before I get it booked
in? The leak (as you stand in front of the car) on the right hand set of cylinders, right at the front.

It could be running out of the water pump gland and then off the
bottom right of the pump body.

I have looked & the pump seems dry, but it's not easy to see!!

Mine suddenly developed a water leak a couple of years ago from around
the same area, it was something to do with the inlet manifold gasket.
Bloke in Reading (now emigrated sadly) fixed it and it didn't take him
long or cost much so it wasn't a major job. Been ok since.

Hi Nige, IF you end up removing the heads, instead of replacing the crap (in
my opinion) stretch bolts with new (still crap!) stretch bolts, for a little
extra you can fit a set of high tensile ARP studs (I buy mine in from Real
Steel) for the ultimate in head clamping force. I've done a lot of 4.6 head
gaskets, replaced a lot using ARP studs and never seen a repeat gasket
failure with a stud kit installed. I personally feel the stretch bolts are
at their limit coping with the 4.6 engine.

I'm hoping not, but if it does need doing I'll get some for the bloke! I have never seen a head gasket
fail to atmoshpere before, I must say!!

What do you reckon regarding the gasket Gazza is on about?

It could be if there are any there. Anyone got a diagram of core plugs on a 4.6?? I'm ****ting bricks at

I reckon it might be a core plug, there is one at each end of the heads. Could just be it, as you cant
see it for the alternator bracket etc. I'll have to get the thing sorted right quick as i need the
ability to tow & carry this week ffs!!
