Hello everyone, I have finally got myself a Land Rover Discovery! I hae wanted one for ages and have just got home after buying one and driving it home. I haven't had a chance to check it out properly yet but took it for a spin and was happy the guy was being genuine with me so I bought it. The only thing I've noticed so far is that the radio won't find a station - hopefully a simple fix. There are buttons on the dash that I don't know what they are for but I will press them tomorrow and see what they do! lol

12 months Mot on it and 5 months tax so I'm well chuffed. Going to Norfolk tomorrow to visit my grandparents so it will get a good run.

Look forward to getting to know you all and my land rover!

Jimmy.

hahahahahahahahahahaha:D:D:D

Good wagon hammer man.Check under carpet for rust.Wheel arches and boot floor.Chassis ought to be good. You can get alloy floor replacements;);)

300tdi that year i think.May be 200 tdi but they is the best injuns.Worth fixin if it breaks.:D:D

Thanks, will have a look for rust.

The radio still won't pick up any stations.. I notice the ariel on the front is down - shall I just force it up? I thought I'd ask first incase its an electric ariel and I break the motor?

Thanks for all the welcome messages. It would appear on further inspection that the aerial is altogether missing! lol I thought it was just down inside but its not.. hhmmm, oh well, I've got one station at least now (although I don't know quite how!)

As for buying blind, The land rover is clean and tidy, no obvious rust, test drove great, 12 months Mot, 5 months tax etc. So it would seem my only downfall was to keep the radio switched off for the test drive so that I could listen for any knocking, tapping, clonking etc. At least I only have a radio to put right eh?!

Right, off to Norfolk shortly so need to get ready.. Will let you know how the trip goes.

Got back from Norfolk around an hour ago. Did 120 miles today. All the way there with no problems and then 10 minutes from home my wife said she could smell something. I couldn't smell a thing but pulled over anyway and when I did steam started coming out from under the bonnet. I carefully opened the header tank and sure enough there was no water in it. Luckily I carry water and oil in the boot so I topped it up and drove home. Must be a leak as it got all the way there with no steam (perhaps a slow leak that the fella knew about but failed to tell me?!)

Oh well, looks like I have something to sort out after all..

Also, something that I don't like but didn't notice when I test drove (as I didn't go over 40 mph), when I get up to 60 mph and over the whole car vibrates and it gets very noisy.... Any ideas what might be causing that?

On the possitive side I found the aerial! lol It was hanging down under the wheel arch so has obviously been pushed right through or something so will have a look tomorrow and see if I can figure out how it goes back on as its all in one piece! :D

I hope it isn't your head gasket. Welcome

A common leak is the P Gasket. It is between the bracket that the water pump is mounted on and the engine block. It might look dry when you check because the leak could be a dribble that evaporates quickly, but there will be anti-freeze staining if it is leaking. There is a pic here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richard.martin/discovery/waterpump.jpg This is looking from the front passenger side

The vibration could be any number of things related to steering and/or suspension. To start with you could check the tyre pressures (book says 26psi at the front and 34 at the back, many people have other opinions) and get the wheels balanced.

Hi Richard,

Thank you very much for your advice and photo. I will take a look and see what I can see.. I've done another 20 miles since last night and have checked the water level and it seems to be staying topped up - perhaps a small dribble as you say. Once I find out where the leak is, if there is one, is it easy to drain the water that I topped it up with to replace it will antifreeze?

I will check the tyre pressures this afternoon and will get the car booked in to have the wheels balanced. I'm not very clued up on cars but I have a feeling its not tyres or whell balancing as it didn't feel like a wheel balance issue that I've experienced with another car. The noise was quite something!

Thanks once again,

HM.

oh, I almost forgot, the radio now works, I reconected the aireal under the wing and posted it back up through the hole...:)
