this morning.
After googling the symptoms of fluctuating temp gauge and broken cabin heater i came across plenty of forum questions and answers pointing to either the thermostat or the fact that if something had been done to the cooling system it may not have been bled.
Well i bought a new thermostat as its only a 7 quid part, proceeded to change and it was then i discovered whoever fitted(badly) the previous thermo used the wrong one and didnt bother with a gasket.

I took it for a 50 mile round trip and the temp needle didnt budge passed 1 3rd mark and the fans are now blowing as hot as i presume land rovers blow.

I did an oil and filter change as i had my tools out so i am chuffed to bits now that my amatuer mechanic skills saved me quite a few bob today.:)

When you say "the fans are now blowing as hot as i presume land rovers blow." It gives the impression that the heater is not very hot. My heater is nice and toasty after only a few miles on the coldest of winter mornings.

Mines nice and hot too. You may want to check if the system is bled correctly as i had a similar problem and had an air lock in the top of the thermostat. Bled the system and away to go. Saying that, if your temp needle is only reading 1/3rd then it may be as hot as it will get. Check the pipes from the radiator to the heater matrix and the engine to the radiator and see if there is a major difference in temp from engine temp to matrix temp.

oops look like i dropped an e.

When i say as hot as it gets, i am going on what others have posted about how the heaters are not that hot.
As it go's it really hot but i havent owned a land rover before or a diesel to that matter so i only have petrol fords to go by.
