Hello All,

New to LZ, dad got me hooked on landrovers when we bought a defender 90 200tdi, done a load of work on in and now swapping my vw t25 for a defender 110 td5 or tdci would love some advice on what to buy.

currently in the uk hunting. The purpose of the vehicle would be for camping/touring/offroading but nothing strenuos, ive spent enough time under my van to learn to drive cars gently.... most of the time.

Hi and welcome!

The main issue with the Defender is rust in the chassis and bulkhead. Both can be changed but at considerable expense so check each carefully. The other issue is theft, especially the Tdci models so invest heavily in security measures and check chassis numbers are present too.

The Td5 can be remapped for performance and is very popular. Lots of advice on both in the Defender section.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Knappster,

Thanks for the welcome. My main dread with a td5 is being stranded due to electronics, i believe thats why there is a great following for 200/300tdi because its just mechanical?

How reliable would you say they are and how fixable are they in the middle of B.F. nowhere.

Electronics are not my forte and Id like to know if its possible to ateast get the car to a garage on its own wheels i heard its got a limp mode but can you overide electronics to still drive a td5 aslong as you know what the problem is/ faulty sensor? Is it just a case of taking spare sensors or ECU?

Also seen on some other posts that a new remapped ECU would be around 2k? And that its not as easy as plug and play, so is it possible/what is required to swap an ECU out in the woods?

Please excuse my ignorance,

Clayrr

Increaswe the security. They're too easily stolen. Get a tracker. Search for MTrack on youtube.
