Have you changed both ball joints. Have you disturbed adjusting collet? Top should be tightened first after adjusting with special tool. Bottom tightened second. Put a stand under the swivel hub and lower car onto it that may engage taper better. Or run nut down your old ball joint to weaken the nylock. Properly tightened it will not come undone.

No not replaced anything ,started to undo nut (top joint only)then thought better of it,
I have read up on setting after replacing ball joints.
so just want to tighten it up again but the whole thing turns.

anyone ,:confused:cant drive the thing till I can tighten this up.

Have already told you what to do. Put a stand under swivel hub and lower the weight of the car onto it. That may just push the lower joint against its spring and lock the taper on the upper one.

tried that wammers (should have said),still turns .
does the top of it come off, opposite end to the nut, cant quite see on mine if there is a joint ,its a bit rusted up.

as I ve not fitted a new ball joint ,is access to the ball itself under this top,it looks like a cap but so much crap on it cant see if it will come off to give you access to find were allen key goes.

no it does not come off and dont try!!!!
the tapered part with the thread that you put the nut on has the allen key hole to stop it spinning and you have to use a spanner to do the nut up as you cant use a socket on the nut else you cant get to the allen key hole
