How to stop the crankshaft pulley spinning?

Ok after searching and searching I've finally given up and decided to ask the experts..

I have brought a 200tdi discovery with a snapped timing belt, with the plan to fix it then convert my 19j engine in my defender to a 200tdi...


I started to strip the engine parts then i thought Oh i need to crack the dog nut while the engine is still in so it is easier to do later on...

In my head i thought that the starter motor would turn the pistons which where attached to the crank and turn the crank... after all i know the pushrods and maybe more is already dead so what damage could it do...

I also thought the crank pulley was the one that turned the whole timing belt.

it didn't work, didn't turn the crankshaft bolt so i was wrong there :(...

How can i stop the crank pulley from spinning while I'm swinging off a breaker bar trying to undo the nut?

all i can seem to find when searching is how to get the pulley off...


I change my timing belt on my 300 tdi when i serviced it and i turned the key with a breaker bar on the underside but that was on a working engine.

Starter motor should turn crank nut as it turns the flywheel on the other end of the crank:confused:
 
the engine isn't fully out, i have loosened off the 17mm bolts on the back of the flywheel only slightly tho, front prop is off.. trying to think of any reason it won't turn the crankshaft pulley.


my friend made the starter motor go with a spanner and screw driver as id undone that many cables the ignition no longer worked...i could hear the starter motor spinning away nicely to itself.
 
Confused, are you trying to remove the front crank pulley bolt?
If so, can't you lock the damper?
 
on the 200tdi its a 30mm nut I've heard it called a dog nut...?
Its the main crank shaft bolt i believe. when i try and undo it with the breaker bar it just pulls the crank pulley around on the belt. id guess this would be turning the crank inside.
 
possibly a better idea ;)

i think i just need to stop the pulley from moving, if i could bolt something on like you say graham... just a matter of how to.. any ideas?
 
Get a big piece of angle, drill 2 holes in the middle and bolt it to the pulley - simples.
Had to do the same to my boat engine to pull the harmonic balancer
 
think ill cut a big hole in the middle of a sheet of metal for the socket to go through, and then two hole in it each side, as there are 2 hole in the pulley itself, hopefully get a long thing bolt through those 2, then a handle welded onto the metal and wedge it somewhere, ill let you guys know tomorrow how i get on.
 
Would have to be thick sheet steel, if the pulley has 4 holes (same as 300tdi) then why not pick 2 of the holes next to eachother and bolt direct to the bar??
The correct LR tool for the 300 is a ring with 4 holes for bolting to the pulley and a long bar welded to it - I have one but they are pricey
 
yeh I've been browsing ebay and found the same sort of this, may try and cut it out of 3mm steel then weld something onto that for the depth of the pulley and then a long handle onto that.. if you get what i mean.
 
Shorting the starter will make the motor spin but you need to power the trigger wire ( spade connecter ) aswell to engage the starter first, as it's a pre engage starter
 
We tightened the crank bolt on my Td5 engine at the weekend - I put the box into first and stood on the footbrake while my friend heaved on a long breaker bar. I'm sure the same would work to loosen it. Just a thought, but of course you'll need the prop to be attached.
