In 2004 after many years of driving my parents VW polo I purchased my first vehicle. A Land Rover Defender TD5 90 CSW. My dream for many years.
Earlier this year through my father I dropped on a nice Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi and after borrowing a few bob from my old man managed to purchase the used vehicle.
In the mean time, as I was in the process of selling the Landy, I sold the following items to get some immediate cash back to my father.
GKN Overdrive, Allisport intercooler+silicon hoses, Race seats, ECU+remap, roof light bar. I think the sum came to around £1500. The 90 is now back to standard.
I advertised the 90 on the internet (autotrader) for a mere 2 weeks but no luck
In the meantime....I've had some time to mull it over in my head.
Could I afford to keep and run the Td5 (part-time) and the Audi!!!???
I am a total LR enthusiast and did intend to buy another Defender in the future...however as it stands the current £ I owe my old man is £5400.
How much Land Rover defender can you buy for £5400!? Not much really. My Td5 has been well looked after and for a 2000 TD5 with 48k on the clock it looks and runs well. Many years in her yet.
Recently had a huge service too: Clutch, flywheel, all oils+filters. Also, after making a mistake when removing the GKN OD had to have a new set of transfer gears put in!
Idiot.
So, let's cut to the chase....
Are there any Land rover specific insurers out there that would insure the 90 for a maximum miliage of say...3,000/4,000 miles a year to keep the running costs down?
I'd hate to sell it. Would have to cut back on a lot of other pleasures but it would be worth it I think. I also have a £1000 Maggiolina Safari Roof tent I bought a couple of years ago (pre house mortgage treat
) that could do with a few more trips too! Keep seeing happy Defender drivers bombing around and feel weird without the camp wave to each other
I know I have to tax, mot, service and insure it. These are the things I need to take into consideration too. The service and insurance are the main points to look into.
Thanks for your help folks. It would be a lovely toy to keep, if an expensive one

ps: I would like to use the 90 for a holiday with the roof tent this summer. Wonder if any insurers would cover it for a month?

I currently pay £650 for the Audi which is roughly the same for the 90. Doesn't help that I had a bump exactly one year ago. My current status is a 25 year old teacher.
