How robust is a 2.25 engine?

I am NEVER going to deface my series by putting anything else but a 2.25 in, but out of interest, what sort of mileage will you get out an old 2.25 diesel?

Mine was originally a Petrol engine, but was changed to a diesel some time in the 1980s, showing 67,700 on the clock, I am geussing the vehicle has done 167,700 because in the history package I own, it showed 80,000 on one of the MOT doccuments in 1994, then a few years later, 20,000 in 2000 ish.

I had a few months with no speedo, so I am geussing it will be about 170,000 miles, so its probably over 100k on the diesel engine alone.

Do you think, if looked after it will do another 170,000 miles?

i think it will need new rings in 378.98 miles, however if you only drive it on Fridays they will last another 478.67 miles

BoB either you said that to **** me off, or didnt even read a word of this thread. No means No. Im an enthuisiast, there is no way in gods green earth the 2.25 is being changed, Never, ever.

chill out pal, i hate to tell you this but your landy has already been defaced

non original engine

Yes I know, but its an original engine of the time. and bits of it it are still petrol, thats why it was so hard to fit a throttle cable, because someone had botched up a rod petrol linkage to the N/S with bowden cable to the pump on the O/S.

Its all sorted now mind, but its a period engine, not like a 2.5

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that both the 2.25 petrol and diesel engine had rods and links for the 'throttle'. It's only the 2.5 that had a throttle cable.

well, it has a link from the pump to the pedal, and the movement of the rubber sleeve is what makes the engine rev, not the cable itself

I don't understand, does it have a cable to the injector pump for the throttle or not and I don't mean the fuel stop cable?

I am only asking because from what you have said you may have a 2.5 engine there already. Better IMHO as they are all 5 bearing crank is inhertantly more robust. As for how long it will last.................length of string anyone? :)

As the others have said - How long is a bit of string?

The 2.25 is a good engine. It is simple and keeps going - However at your Mileage, things will have worn and compression will have been lost.

I am rebuilding my 2.25 Desiel at the moment, and it is really simple. It had been rebored (With new pistions) and had the crankshaft reground at some point so it was a good base to start with.

The valves were very bad and the valve springs were a bit on the weak side so they have been changed. A new Gasket and seal set is £11 from Paddocks, genuine front crank seal was £10 and a rear crankseal was £3.50 (It is no longer manafactured as a genuine part - I could probably have got one from Dunsfold but a Bearmach will do).

Next i am doing the Crank (Thrust washers and bearings. Need to measure them first though), then the Cam (Probably Bearings and Followers). Will also be doing the Timing chain :) The key to getting these engines to run well is the pump timing! Get that right and it can transform the engine :)
