as title ,for the legal reasons ie Vosa u need original chassis or direct new replacement to keep that id ,and same engine or box or same axles suspension,or same steering like for like ,assuming it works as the same ref id for tax exempt rules ,, ,,,,,,,so my question is how original is original if you're lanny has had various mods over the years by various owners ,ie 300tdi engine gearbox upgrade by another owner, axles to disc allround by another ,you see where im going with this !!!!!so when little old me gets his mits on it and changes stuff ,engine ,box ,axles body tub ,chassis wheels, suspension apart from keeping ma gob shut (buggered that one up already) if Mr Vosa stops me and checks it over ,do i cop for all the mods done to her in a lifetime or do they have a "its a land rover mechano set" so as long as nowts stolen (which it aint) don't buy dodgy stuff !!!! is all well or will they take mine and prob most lannys of us and bang a "Q" on them what's you're views, regards gatso .:bolt::boink:

like for like on an original left the factory yes but what if nothing is original after so many years ,,,2.5 turbo diesel can u call a 300 tdi "like for like" r380 box ,for a lt77 ,drum brake rear axle for disc axle i know its a mine field but has anybody had direct dealings and therefore a feasible answer for them that want to know ,,,(ie me)

well a lot of defender parts are the same, so the nothing bit is wrong.

anyway look at https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/radically-altered-vehicles
Your vehicle must have 8 or more points from the table below if you want to keep the original registration number. 5 of these points must come from having the original or new and unmodified chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame.

Part Points
Chassis, monocoque bodyshell (body and chassis as one unit) or frame - original or new and unmodified (direct from manufacturer) 5
Suspension (front and back) - original 2
Axles (both) - original 2
Transmission - original 2
Steering assembly - original 2
Engine - original 1

fixing chassis is fine, shortening isn't.

so a patched chassis with a couple mounts welded on for the 300 should be fine. there's 5

iirc the suspension is the same on the drums and disc sals, so another 2

steering is the same, so another 2.

lost axles, trans and engine

however, the sva was brought in in 98.. so if the mods were done before..

but no, i haven't had any direct experience and i wouldn't go phoning to ask

So are you saying like for like is a Land Rover part ie steering not from another model or a manufacturer so if it had leaf spring it must be replaced by leaf ,, axle must be Land Rover and not jag irs etc lol but what I'm saying is if I buy a tdci and one month both axles become FUBAR on my 1989 td I can swap them over ?! A month later I hit a low bridge 🚧 so swap the entire body over ! Then bugger me with such bad luck the engine seizes and I swap the tdci over and throw away the td and this is all documented then the box buggers up so its ok I have a 6 speed there doin nowt ! So like I say how original is original all parts are Land Rover , from a similar model but now I have a 1989 tdci not rung but parts replaced ????? Parts from one doner or doners via Internet sites is there an acceptable line in the eyes of the law 🚔 and no I ain't going to ring and ask them lol 🙈🙉🙊

from what i understand... using that example.

you would lose 1 for the engine, 2 for axles and 2 for transmission. body doesn't seem to count.

So 9 left, you pass.

if you then decided to modify the suspension to air.. then you lose another 2 and have 7 points left.. q reg.

you can however buy brand new replacement parts 'like for like'. So you could fit a new galv chassis. a newer steering box would probably pass, etc.

like any other vehicle, if you wanted you could replace every single part of it for brand new parts and it would keep the same reg.. would cost a fair bit though.

The thing is vosa are not going to know the difference between early and late axles and I would say that goes for the rest of the car, a 19j is a 2.5 turbo diesel as is a 200 and 300 tdi!
At the end of the day they are going to lift the bonnet note that its a diesel with a turbo but are going to more interested in the vin numbers and chassis stamping if its original

Like for like means , leafs for leafs, when you start putting a diesel in place of a petrol, it starts to get a bit complicated . Manual gearbox for manual gearbox , would most likely need to be land rover origin . You will need lots of receipts, of where you got the parts. The chassis cant be modded , so fitting a tdci would be a bit difficult , unless you could fabricate engine brackets that allowed no mod to the chassis . If they decide in the end that you are trying to take the mick , then they can make your life very problematic. Its DVSA now and some drive landrovers

a big can of worms then ,,,,,,,lets put the lid back on and and hide the tin in the shed next to "Jimmy hoffer" ,and the "centre steer" ...lol

Got speaking to a guy up north in a part of scotland where most locally used cars dont have mots.... He had a q plate 110. Asked him how that came about.

He phoned to ask similar questions to you and basically got hounded into an inspection.

Q plate time.

Asshats.

Id imagine a majority of offroad modified landies would end up q plated.
