I've only recently changed all the liquids, but I'll give it try in a few months when I re-do the engine oil.

The thing is that the oil was changed many times since i used that additive and the lifters are still less noisy...

Its an old Derv it'll make noise!!!

Use good oil it'll be fine!

I'd rather have it noisy than broken.....

Actually the only time I hear mine is if I'm stood outside it with the engine running which is hardly ever.

I'm beginning to think that the extra noise is because my DIY gearshift gaiter hasn't been refitted.

don’t go putting them additives in your engine, just use a decent oil, I can recommend total quartz 10w40 expensive but it’s packed with zddp which is an anti-wear additive, just what an old engine like the td5s love

IMO "decent oil" is decent due to it's additive pack which is in it from factory so all decent oils have additives alraedy in them and they evolved so much to suit different engines according to theyr types, my own choice after many hours of study is to better use the dedicated oil for EUI/PD engine which the Td5 is(old or not) and give it additive dedicated for a certain purpose if necessary like in my case the noisy lifters were and after the noise went away the oil was changed... I'd not consider decent to use oil with high zinc content while a 80V pulsatory current is circulating through the connectors which are in it... nor 10W oil which increases the wear on cold start cos it takes more time to climb from the sump being thicker.... this was discussed to infinity but IMO if the engine is noisy then not filling it with thicker oil to damp down the noise is the cure ... anyway, to each his own

5w isn’t better for cold starts on a td5, possibly in the dead of winter in norway but not here in the UK, having a 10w allows for the oil to come up to pressure quicker which in turn is causing less engine wear, you may be right about the dedicated oil for the injectors but these are all low ash oils which isn’t suited for the td5 and it’s old school design, more for cars with dpfs which the td5 doesn’t have...

The bolded part is wrong information IMO ... 5w is better than 10w for "cold starts" for any engine old or new... the thicker the oil is the harder it will ''climb'' from the sump up to the head and 10W is thicker than 5w all over the world regardless if it's Norway, UK or Africa... that's why it can damp down some noise eventually... when it's about ''cold start" of an engine it doesnt mean that it must be cold or freezing outside just that the engine stood for a while as the oil went down to the sump... are you saying that in a summer morning in UK when you start the engine after it rested all night is not a ''cold start" ?

the above statement has no logic nor scientific backup

as i said i've studied loads of articles about engine oils(from official sites not oppinions on forums), as a simple example read the 3'rd paragraph at "viscosity" here http://www.driverstechnology.co.uk/oils.htm
... i'm up to a friendly polemic about oils if you want but then you'll have to come with well documented arguments

Changing from 5w30 semi to fully synthetic made my engine quieter. A dash of 2 stroke always made my 300tdi much quieter but not so much on the td5.
