Just looking on fleabay at options for replacing front axle complete on my old 90. There are several disco axles in my area, some 10 spline and some 24 spline - whats the best option please and anything else I should be looking for??

thanks steve

24 spline will be stronger as the force/pressure is distributed over a larger contact area.

I cannot comment on compatability with you 90, But if you can go for 24, go for 24.

There is much in it between diffs, but 24 spline half shaft are stronger. However, you will get the weakest CVs in a Disco 24 spline axle. That doesn't matter if you are not doing anything very aggressive or don't have large tyres.

I personally would prefer to have the stronger CV's and weaker shafts/diffs. If I break a shaft its no biggi. I tend to drive quite respectfully of the drivetrain tho even when competing. Doing a CV could be more of a pain at a comp miles from home as I drive to and from. I have Seen 10 and 24 spline fail and think that 24 is most definatly stronger but I would still go for Better CV's. Rear I would go for the Disco axle cos of the disk brakes all round. Jai

In fact I am plan on fitting 4.7 ratio diffs front and rear to get my gear ratio back to somwhere drivable and for lowering my low range to a sensible speed with my ex-mil 36/37 inch tyres.

I have a 110 rear axle 4.7 ratio to be disk brake converted using Genuine 110 parts and my detroit to go into. I have a 4.7 ratio front diff that I will have a go at pegging and possibly getting a 4 pin centre but ultimatly it will still be 10 spline to comply with the standard shafts. It may be that the shafts are not up to much, it may be that the diff centers rip out but I do not want the diff or CV to get damaged. Uprating one thing will just lead to a failure furthur down the driveline to the next weakest component. Jai

Andy that does make alot of sense. I don't wanna loose the stronger Cv's tho guess I gotta save some dosh for Ashcrofts shafts. With a 5 year guarantee theyre not that expensive but tell that to my bank manager. Jai

Depends on your starting point. Original poster and you both have the early AEU2522 CV I assume. I did state that you will get the weaker CVs in a 24 spline axle.

Going back to starting point.....I was running 10 splines under the Disco when I got it and the CVs in those axles are not the 2522 ones. I choice to go 24 spline and deal with the CV breakage as a compromise. I preferred the increased strength of the 24 spline shafts. As I also said earlier open diffs help reduce breakage as well.

If I was going forward from my current setup then I would use a pair of 'AEU2522 swivel ends' (if you see what I mean) and point the credit card at some Ashcroft shafts to link up to the 24 spline diff in the front. Then keep my ear to the ground for a 4-pin rear.

However,.....as a general useage upgrade and weekend green laning tool then I would go for 24 spline over 10 spline because of the reduced wear issue with an increased spline count and the younger age of the components.
