Last Sunday, after some screeching on the motorway, the car lost drive - it worked for a while but finally gave up the ghost and refused to do anything in any gear.
So it was time to call the RAC. The RAC man could find no solution so called out a relay truck.
The relay man got it to engage hi box and that allowed drive - but we chose the relay home.
He suggested that it had possibly lost all its oil and overheated causing it to somehow refuse to engage either hi or low. He went on to suggest that during the time it had taken for him to get to the car it had cooled down enough to allow it to engage.
Later still I could engage low box - perhaps it had really cooled down.
Either way, at least she seems driveable....
So today I finally got around to looking at the suspected transfer box.
Under the car, there was a lot more oil than the last time I was there but not that much to be outstanding but when I took the drain plug out (after taking out the filler plug) I got, wait for it, about half a cup of very dark oil
The drain plug magnet had about half a teaspoon of oily iron filings attached to it
What should I do next?
I was thinking buy some more oil, swill it through, check there are no bigger bits of metal then refill it and hope for the best.
Along with hope I was thinking of jet washing the underside and keeping an eye out for leaks.
Am I deluding myself?
