How does your clutch feel???

Hi all,

still working through the list of kinks in my new-to-me disco 1 300tdi, The clutch is next on the list.

My one has all the action in the very last inch of pedal travel and can be quite fierce unless i'm careful. There seems to be no sign of drag and all gears are easy to get into its just very heavy and short on the action.

Are they all like this or is there a specific point to check.

I will be bleeding the line soon as air is the only fault i could think of.

Mine's nice and progrssive, like a clutch should be I think, though needs firm pressure .. ;)
 
when you say last inch of movement do you mean up or down? if its in the last inch up i would say its prob not far off wanting replacing
 
I would give it a good bleed, sounds like the pedal isnt pushing the clutch forks far enough and may have air in or a leak.
Then check things in order of " easier to fix"
Slave cylinder, look for leaks, are the bolts tight? Rubber seals inside could have perished or been damaged
Next, you need to check the master cylinder , as above

Then your into clutch forks and clutchplate, could be a faulty plate, but do the easiest things first

Can the fork be changed without yanking the box??

I dont think its a leak, does not lose fluid.

I bled it yesterday and found that with the bleed screw undone and ez-bleed pipe fitted, the pedal did not return without help is this normal??

I had a similar problem which turned out to be crud blocking the passage of fliud from the reservoir in the master cylinder. New master cylinder and a bleed through with new fluid sorted it. To check master cylinder operation try clamping the flexible hose off and pushing the pedal - it should be virtually solid, if it still pushes to the floor I would suspect master cylinder.
