....check the axle breathers on my 200TDI Defender ?

Yes I know this is basic but I'm basic in knowledge (!) but keen to learn. What are the do's / don't's and what should I be looking for ? How would I know if there's an issue ?

All help appreciated !

Unscrew them off the axle, from memory, they come apart for cleaning or replace them with 1/8" bsp - 6mm push fit fittings.

Yes. I think it splits into two parts and there is a ball bearing inside. It was 14yrs ago mind but they do just screw in, it's how they come apart for cleaning I'm a little forgetful of, but it isn't difficult I remember that.

I should say...clean all the dirt/rust flakes from around the fitting first, don't want muck getting in the diff.

Later axles have a simple banjo bolt with a pipe running off.

Some older ball bearing type (? Ive never taken one apart just squirted with plusgas) have been converted, many using push fit connections, the pipes can run anywhere, engine bay/side of the tub....it's just a matter of poking around and seeing what you've got and taking it apart enough to be sure the air can get out as it expands but won't suck water under rapid cooling
