Hi, I've just inherited a Defender 110 as my company has just purchased a new 110. It's a 2.5lr deisel, manual , C reg and has done 180k. It sounds a bit rough compared to the companies TD5 engine.
I have always owned standard petrol cars and have always dreamt of owning a Landrover Defender. It all feels like another world when i pop that bonnet up and i must say that I feel like i have taken on a whole new responesability by taking the defender under my wing (or am i under it's wing?) But i was wondering if anyone out there had some tips on the following:-

1)servicing it, .............information on the best parts to buy? oils, filters, procedures, handbooks (do i bother with the dredded haynes? ) etc.

2)I've never owned a diesel what's the crack with the glow plugs, is it as straight forward as 'off with the old and on with the new'?

3) I know it's quite old but the gear change is abit rough in the mornings, grinding gears (mainly in first and second), gets smoother if i rev the
engine. is that normal?

4) once i'm away everytime i change up a gear, as soon as i bring the clutch up i feel a thump, is that normal?

5) Anyone know any good breakers to get parts in and around London?

6) i can just about manage 50mph then it starts doing slarlam on the dualcarriage way, surely that's not normal. my tyres are offroad tyres, but could it be the tracking?

7) there's no heating, any solutions?

i'm not sure if i should just 'get in there and do it' or whether i should wait........ for that moment of clarity?

Anyway that's my plight for this week. i'm sure you'll hear from me soon. as i spend most sundays taking things apart and then the week to put it all back together again.

Cheers, and thanks.

hi and welcome
service items get em from mail order cos such as craddocks or paddocks.
glow plugs dead easy to change.
gear change is a bit agricultural after a ford focus!
the thump is fairly common, but check underneath for any loose uj,s etc..
tyres? get some proper road ones.
heating? very poor heaters. reverse flush the system may help.

The heating problem, well with the 110 you have the room in the rear for a decent sized coal fire that will keep you warm in the winter & you could use it for BBQ's in the summer lol. You could fit a diesel fueled heater (i removed one from my TD5 Defender but should have kept it) also used in campers/ horse boxes.

first thing to do is to get someone who actually knows what they are looking for have a look around it. not someone who will also fix it at a cost though unless you trust their judgement.

service items such as filters and stuff can be found in the workshop manual , buy one , their dead handy and much much better than a heins.
also if you want to stretch it a parts catalog is also dead handy for part numbers when ordering bits.
you will also be able to do the glow plugs and most other things with these books.

this gear thing is not normal , no.
look at the clutch fluid , is it blackish in color? if so your master and slave are on their way out. easy to change , with the books.

the thump is not normal either. sounds like your a frame ball joint , is there a clunk with the bump?
it could also be a dodgy universal joint on one of the props.
the ball joint is a pig to do , the uj's are easy.

i know a good breakers in london , what are you after?
IL pm you the number.

the slalom thing , id need to be looking at your landy to properly diagnose this. probably bushings or ball joints though. probably.

change the thermostat and service the heating system , it can and will work with a bit of tlc.

it sounds to me like the land rover just needs a little sorting. none of these are massive jobs but if i were you id do all the oils , timing belt , flush the coolant and replace , grease everything and look over the suspension and steering. it sounds like it might have been a tad neglected in the past.

what part of London are you in?

Mine goes Bump! but its only when i come off the clutch too quickly! (thats because i am a learner and the BSM 56 plate astra is like another world (a boring, slow and not fun kind of world!!))

sorry nobber but i didn't get your other message, i haven't worked out how to use this website yet.
The rest of it sounds good though, makes sense, i'm in Hackney, yeah, ideally i was thinking of working with someone to get over the protocol of working on a 110, ........ but the question is a case of time, don't know alot of people who are willing to 'work' on a sunday even though i'm quite happy to do so the other problem is i live in a dense residential area with no workshop space to do major overhauls. I have managed servicing my vehicles on the public road short of changing a timing belt (which i've never done anyway), i guess i'm a wanna be mechanic........bit like what they say about plasterers............. only i get the oil all over me rather then on the floor...........se la ve.......... at least it keeps the board house wifes entertained..........
but on a serious note if any ones out there who fancies setting up maybe a fortnightly/monthly workshop where guy's like myself can get together and sort out stuff, with maybe the help of a few wise defender bods.

I like to understand the nature of the beast!

Snaking can be your tyre pressures too - very very cheap fix for that, usually no more than 20p or so. It would be the first thing I'd check, but you might not be as tight as me.

Cheers,
