How do I know it's not officially "Scrapped"

Hi guys.

I'm about to buy a 1974 88" S3.
But.... the guy's had it in the garage for about 5 years and claims he never got the V5 from the Farmer he bought it from, so never actually been registered in his name.

The Number plate and VIN plate is present and understand I can apply to the DVLA for the V5.

But, before I buy it, or send off and pay for a V5 in my name, is there a way of finding out if its been registered as scrapped and/or stolen?

I'm confident it's not been stolen but just want to make sure the "identity" is still "live" for the vehicle.

Thanks in advance.

Gareth.

You can check to see if it is insured , Taxed, MOT ed etc...if it is not it should be SORN.

The other choice is doing a proper HPI vehicle history check, not onedone on your phone as a text message. RAC do them with a guarantee.

Good luck

Cheers

Thanks NEILLY, I've tried the DVLA "tax check" site which says its "sorn". But.. when i entered an old Astra of mine which I scrapped a couple of years ago, that was also a "sorn", but a Peugeot I scrapped 10 yesrs ago states as being "un-taxed", so no sence thete.

Thank you too FFG, thats the DVLA page I used.

Might have to be proper HPI !

I look at it this way...

£15 for a proper HPI check that is guaranteed for what could be quite an investment is not a bad deal. You probably spend more in fuel going to look at a prospective motor.

Cheers

Yep, think you're right.

I'll go and note the VIN number and Reg. tomorrow, crossed fingers, love to get it back on the off-road as it were.
