MOT man says I need to do my swivel seals: one looks like it leaks, but the other's OK, but there's no oil in the diff and teh bearing seals are shot. Both swivels are shiny with no pitting. Do I need to replace the swivels, or will I get away with just the seals? It's a 1991 Def 90 and I think the swivels are original.

If the swivel balls are shiny with no pitting then they are fine.

If they are badly leaking oil out the back, then yes you need to replace the oil seals.

If the MOT guy felt give in the swivel then you might need to replace the swivel pin bush and/or the upper swivel pin, lower pin or lower pin bearing.

None of the above difficult to do or particularly expensive.

Try jacking it up and rocking the wheel, on my 110 it was the bearings on the pins that were knackered and check the swivel ball also for damage
