From all of the above, two thoughts come to mind,
1 If the timing is set up correctly the amount of fuel per injection should be correct and as the ECU dictates ? Presuming the ECU gets the correct engine temperature reading from the sonde, (Green).
2 This alleviates the need for the glow plugs to light up when the engine is hot, so no need for a 'Hot-start' kit, either.
How do you set up the timing with a nanocom instead of a gauge or is that not possible? What readings should one look for on the nano? What is 'modulation' in this instance exactly? 'Emulator' ??

Injection static timing has nothing to do with injected fuel quantity.

So static timing only gives one " its when" and not how much, then chain stretch either advances or retards, which is it, presumably retards. Intuitively if you get tickover spot on it should work for the whole range. How do you/ can you, set it with a nano? So what is this thing 'modulation', is it just to make the engine quieter? Is this modulation of injection rate, is that a combination of pressure, quantity and time, varying ? So %ages of what?

The idle speed is set by adjusting the lower part of the two top caps on the pump. The timing is set by rotating the pump towards or away from the ending block.

not all P38s require a hotstart. Only original early diesel models. If you need one you will notice by the way you have to crank your engine half to death when warm even though everything is 100%
. If you have diagnostics dodgy sensor would throw a code.
Static is mechanical just follow rave to the letter. many readings until it’s bang on before bolting it back together.

Compares start of injection from timing to that measured by the #4 injector. 50% would be ideal at idle on a warm engine.

With a Nanocom you could try tapping the pump towards the engine until you get 50%. Personally I just bought a dial-guage and adapter and timed it up as per RAVE.

Been interesting reading this thread. Maybe this is what has gone wrong with mine maybe?? the clacking sound i have on hard acceleration too which goes if you throttle off. She goes to the Range Rover specialist on Mon/Tuesday so im sure they will get to the bottom of it. Mine only has 106000 genuine miles on the clock too with a full service history of mostly main dealers and £8000 worth of work being done back in 2017 @ Turner Performance in Hemel Hempstead. It also had a stage 1 remap by them too. Mine will start up from cold perfectly and instantly too and she idles at around 800 rpm and sound fine until you blip the gas pedal or drive her then she is like a rough dog and smoking albeit not as bad now since i fitted the new exhaust system last week.
Anyway, for a newby owner i have tried my best to solve her issue but its now time for the RR experts @ D&G to fix her for me and do a few more jobs on her at the same time for me whilst she is in there. Fingers crossed i will get her back running sweet and be able to enjoy her and take her for a nice long run up north and across the midlands and back to Swindon which will do her good and me too.

Perhaps you should have given Turners a ring and asked them what work they carried out,.......And hope you get a better response than @hughandjen did.:D:D
Did that on day 1 of the problem buddy. I spoke with Elliot ( the son ) who was really decent chap on the phone and was very helpful. Sadly they were rammed solid and there was no way i could get my RR there quickly. Anyway i have read others experiences and also the online reviews and they are not good albeit all seems to be aimed at the " old man owner ". No way was i gonna go all the way down there just to be abused by some angry old man for no reason or because i was 10 seconds late. Would most likely have decked him and then achieve nothing.

Only a few more days to go and she will be in good hands at G&D in Minety who's reviews are fantastic plus i have met both owners Greg & Dudley who are really nice chaps.

Sometimes violence is the only answer, short sharp shock usually adjusts attitudes. ;):D

Watch how many people turn up here with major engine problems, adamant it must be something else as they have a stack of Turner receipts. Won’t take long. Think Doos was one of them, neeed new engine in end.

That’s does sound quite appealing
Maybe mine is another Turner's victim and could explain why the last owner traded it back in so shortly after having spent £8000 with them. I feel worse now.
