So last night I was out with the landrover supervising a Scout Night Hike and due to some of the kids having what we might call a "navigational error" I had to get from A to B fairly quickly down about 4 miles of narrow hilly single track country lanes.

The result was a D2 being driven pretty damn hard up the hills, with some fairly harsh braking at times as well and regular gear changes.

When I got to the checkpoint that we needed to get to, I got out of the car and as I walked past it i noticed a distinctive "hot" smell... couldnt work out where it was coming from and didnt have time to stop and play, and it had disappeared 10 minutes later. Didnt smell like overheating clutch, and don't think it was the brakes either...

Anything I should be worrying about?

Mine usually smells a bit hot after it's been working hard (eg towing the caravan). Never worried me in 50,000 miles.....

Try carefully touching your discs to see if they are exceptionally hot. Mine can smell hot if I do a long run after several short ones. I put it down to it burning off the oil that's leaked :)

will keep an eye on it and try that if the smell returns. Its back to "city driving" again today then will be parked up all weekend while I have a hired minibus. However, next week its going to do some serious mileage with heavy towing so that might be a good test.

I was also able to take advantage of some long open straight roads up by Bath Racecourse last night to really open the throttle up... seems to have tuned the engine up again!!

+1 on checking disc temp. Hot smell was first sign of binding caliper slider for me, although I'd expect that to show up more after longer runs at higher speeds

Last night I picked up a fairly heavy trailer, and brought it home including a couple of fairly steep hills... didnt really get above 40mph at any point (as was in the city) but it all seemed fine with no hot smell.
