Hi, it's me again, anyhow my (200 TDi 90) is running a bit warm.
The temp guage sits almost at the top of the white section (but stays there)
someone said that the temp gauge and the sender must be a matched pair to work properly but I do not know what position the needle should be at when operating normally.

What they meant was, a tdi gauge needs a tdi sender to work properly - tdi gauge and 2.5 N/A sender won't give you an acurate reading (or vice versa)

Mine sticks straight up (phnarr) about halfway between cold and the max reading on the gauge.

Is yours a 'genuine' tdi or a transplant into something older?

Mine is a TDi conversion from disco to 110 and uses the Disco sender and the 110 NA guage. Sits half way on the guage, but the engine is no way warm, can happily hold on to any pipe and not get burnt...

Think my Thermostat is stuck open, not sure. The heater is not that hot so its possible, might change it if I get a mo..

Anyhow the guage is only a guide, just keep an eye on it, have the rad checked (see if it gets hot all over or has cold spots) and check the thermostat in case it has jammed shut or partially open
