horrible sound

Take the opportunity and stuff a locker or limited slip diff in if you are going to change it anyway.......clouds, silver lining etc.

Had a clonk from the front diff last autumn. Thought something had jumped up from the road as she continued on as normal. Spotted an oil leak from a spall in the diff housing later that day and suspected the worst. After checking here, some toing and froing with the vendor garage over the warranty and a couple more Clonks, I got a good second hand diff from insideout that took a couple hours to fit. Somehow one of the shaft roller bearings had got into the housing causing occasional clonkage and damage. The inside if the original wasn't pretty. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. I'd agree with @NeilB and take the opportunity to upgrade if you can afford it. Cheers

Thanks, turktowner does sound very similar, someone is going to look at it later for me , we've drained the diff oil which looks fine ,not metallic in any way. No play in pinion bearing either , sound defo coming from diff though. will keep posted

Fingers crossed, mate.

Rear diff is easier to get out than the front.

Drop prop at diff end

Drain diff oil

Remove drive members from both rear wheels

Pull out halfshafts halfway

Unbolt all the bolts around the diff

Pull diff out and look for broken bits.

Refitting is reverse of removal

Fit a recon or an Ashcroft ATB

Prob a couple hours work tops if you have a diff ready to swap in

A lot cheaper when you're doing it yourself too!

i have someone else doing it who works for a land rover company and supplied the diff ,plus came to my yard

Result!!

did it my self before lifted the rear up put two tyres underneath and fit standard steels to get to halfshafts pulled two halfshafts half way removed one end of prop shaft drained oil pulled nuts off cover
