Hi everyone...
So after many months of reading post after post and looking at car after car shopping for a new one I decided it had to be a defender, not the best car for daily driving I know but I wanted a car with character and that wont be worthless in 10 years time so I've bought a 1999 TD5 110, bought it from John craddocks in cannock. Love the car and am very much in the honeymoon period, here she is...

in the car park at work, just about fits the height restriction.

Had her for 5 days now and have came across a few issues as expected owning a landrover I guess. Lost a mud flap and main beam bulb gone. Easily replaced.

Although we are in the honeymoon period I felt she had lied to me from very early on, it was a 2 mile drive to the petrol station and the fuel gauge needle was just above the orange section when she started spluttering and loosing power about 500yards from the petrol station, eventually lost complete power just as we pulled onto the forecourt, had to restart and drive up to the pump, she restarted no problem, put some Diesel in and away we went, no problem for 2 days driving here and there so just thought she had lied to me about how much fuel she had, however this morning driving to work about 1 mile into the trip the sputtering and power loss started again and eventually stalled, restarted and drove 200 yards then conked out again, restarted and drove 50 yards and stalled again, so I stopped and put hazards on and contemplated suicide for a while then restarted her after approx 3 minutes, restarted and drove the rest of the way to work with no issues around 9 miles, on the way home exactly same issues again, I'm a complete noob to the whole landrover experience and would love some advice on what you guys may think is wrong, still have 3 month warranty so will be taking it back to craddocks but would just like as many opinions as possible from some well seasoned defender owners.

1 more issue, not had any problems with the 2 button fob alarm before today but this morning took keys out ignition to open the shutters at work and upon restarted the alarm went off, I tried turning it off with the fob but it just wouldn't go off for like 5 mins straight, eventually went off using the fob but would rather not experience that again, someone said possibly the battery is low being the reason but I thought maybe it's just the battery in the fob itself and me clicking the off button simply wasnt doing anything.

Again any help would be great and sorry to go on for so long, I understand that these things are part and parcel of defender ownership but I am a novice at the moment and new to this.

Thanks

I live 40 miles away from craddocks and never had a problem driving it back home and the 2 days after, I paid alot more than peanuts for it too Haha, is it possible to pick up defender for peanuts nowadays? I've got a pedal lock and ignition lock fitted too for security, I also plan to fit a quick release steering wheel too, surely that will be enough to stop it being nicked? I will call craddocks tomorrow and book it in just wanted a few opinions first, cheers for the replies on the thread though guys

Hi and welcome, the start probs sound a bit like air in fuel lines which I’ve had in my series in the past, but if you post in defender forum you should get more advice,

Hi and welcome!

Smart Landy! As it’s under warranty, get Craddocks to sort it. You can get ideas on the cause here but if you get someone else to sort it or do it yourself, you risk the warranty being voided.

So took her back to craddocks last night after a lot of stop starting 30 mile journey, they've contacted me today and said it's the EGR valve so they have blanked it off. Hopefully that sorts it Haha, cheers guys

No No No they should replace it end of.
Blanking it is cheap option, and if your next MOT tester has knowledge and an eagle eye it will fail.

Don’t accept it.

Just my tupence worth:)

I was under the impression that it would only fail an MOT if the egr blanking caused more emissions and decreased the economic output, also I've read on here alot that people have deleted there for better mpg, performance etc. How do others feel about it? Appreciate the input though, cheers.

You got it as standard, yes? They are taking the cheap option.

Many do it and get away with it. Is it legal ;)
If you do fail an MOT in the future because it’s missing (2years down the line) who’s responsible?

I wouldn’t do it.

As I said my opinion, others may say do it.

Marjon has a point

Blanking kit is £50 and some testers may not accept it for MOT. If you get a new guy few years down the line new MAF will cost you a few hundred and more trouble/expense.

I’d Tell them you rang your insurance - they class it as a mod - you’d rather have it original and avoid insurance complications (lie!) :)

In the uk it will fail on emissions if you disable the egr by blanking it as it's needed for emissions compliance as per the manufacturers original design spec. But the tester will need to see its been fiddled with to know its been blanked.

You can blank it but as above you take the risk later of it needs fixed. Although many peeps blank them... Yer garage has made yer car fail future mot's if spotted.
