Few pics from my half term jaunt to Colonsay in the Inner Hebrides in the BRM. 878 miles at a tad over 30 mpg, 4-up with bikes, a week's food/beer, lots of lego and 70-75 mph motorway cruising. Bit of a scramble to get the highbacks in and the rear benches out before leaving (one side still firmly in place due to seized bolts). Put most of a Noisekiller soundproofing kit in during a gale while there too. Got back last night to find someone had drained the tank on my other car...

Double rainbow. Dormobile never did a conversion with a slate roof.

BRM just about visible in the middle. This is the golf course.

Sunrise on Saturday

Blew a hoolie all week, rained every day. I split the goretex in my boots on the first day and had wet feet all week, and one corner of the BRM's roof is like a sieve. Top holiday though, the light when it stopped raining was fantastic.

Main reason was travel time, extra diesel and fitting everything into the half term week. The boys' tolerance of long drives is pretty good, but you can only push it so far. As it was we did Sheffield to Dumfries after school on the Friday, on to Oban on the Saturday for the lunchtime boat, then stopped in Edinburgh with some friends on the way back and got home late on Sunday. Any further would probably have meant an extra day each way and no time actually there.

We'd originally intended to do half the week on Islay and half on Colonsay, then Calmac changed the winter timetable so the one boat a week between Islay and Colonsay was on Saturday.

Outer Hebrides is definitely on the list though, pre-kids we did a long trip right round the far north of Scotland including some time on the campsite in Ullapool, watching the Stornoway boat go out each morning. I've a cunning plan which involves maybe three weeks, out across Skye, stop in Coll or Tiree, then north through the Western Isles and back via Ullapool. With lots of midge repellent.

Funny reading that bit. Wife and I are looking to do something similar and although our son is holidaying with uni friends, says this is one trip with the parentals he would do.
