today has not been a very good day brothers, i started around the 90 today trying to find reasons to all the faults.

smoke inside the cab due to no seat base plates !

smoke from a ****ing great hole in my transfer box ( i'm guessing it's the transer box)

sorry for the big pictures but i wanted to get large images up so peps knew what has the hole on it.

so my next stage is what to do with it ?

can a new one be soured easy enough or is it big money to get ?

cheers

can anyone else help, if more pictures are needed i'll delete the first lot and take more,
i just need to know what it is that looks damaged and what you guys think the next mave should be, ie is it going to cost more to replace or is it easier to buy a 2nd hand gearbox with this bit on it .

It's the bell housing. There's meant to be one hole in it, but it looks like you've got an extra one.
I'd guess the rear crankshaft oil seal has gone and there's oil leaking into the bell-housing / clutch. Perhaps the extra hole was drilled to aid drainage!

Anyway, it's gearbox out, clutch out (or engine out) to replace the oil seal.

There is a drain hole on the bottom of the gearbox bell housing it's supposed to be there . The smoke is almost certainly the oil burning on the exhaust pipe.
you need to drop the propshafts from the transfer box.
Remove the floor and tunnel from the cab so that you can undo all the nuts
from the gearbox bellhousing
undo gearbox mounting and separate the gearbox from the engine. then have a look and see which seal is leaking. engine or gearbox.

cheers for the replies fella's , thats a relief to hear it's not completely snookered .

does anyone have the part number for the seal or it's correct name so i can go order one from LR.

That oils a bit high up for crank seal me thinks - more likely be the breather pipe at the back of the block cracked and running down the bell housing .

Take a peek on the drivers side of the engine as far back as you can and you'll see a pipe , see if theres oil around there first before you rip the gearbox out to do a crank seal .

.

Just adjusted the pic and the inside of the drain/timing hole is dry

Oh and that wire hanging down is more likely your diff lock warning wire thats come off the switch ,

.

Better pic.... it looks like 2 holes? Are they both threaded? Wonder if it could be a breather hole that was plugged and sheared and a second was drilled? Now both are out?

That wire has been disconected and likely to be for a reason rather by accident. I had one like that loose on top of my bell housing and it was for my reversing light. I plugged it in and hey presto... blew the fuses for all lights on that fuse. Needs a new switch. Does your diff lock light and reversing light work? Just have some spare fuses on hand:)

Before you go changing the rear engine seal - do a quick check that your engine breathers are clear. A blocked breather can result in the engine blowing oil out somewhere (ask me how I know that one!!!)
