First the good news, my 55 plate TD4 passed the MOT with no problem :clap2:, however while carrying out the service he found the high pressure pump has a small leak, that will probably get worse in time. I am wondering if this is a known failure or a rare event, and whether to take a chance and get a pre-used one (one on ebay with 50,000 less miles on it, £150) or to go for a recon/new, much more expensive, depending on what's available. Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated.

Sorry chaps, I thought that the 'search' that was done when I started writing this thread would include all the info I have now found.

My advice if it is leaking is to change it quick. If it leaks and pushes atomised diesel into the crankcase ventilation then the engine will get faster and faster until it blows. Taking the key out will not stop it. See my post on this. Very scary !!!

I had an experience of a runaway diesel on a dumper I was driving many years ago. It suddenly started revving its tits off, we all stood watching it (about 50 yards away) waiting for the bang, but it never did. After a while one of the old boys jumped on it, stuck it in gear, stood on the brake pedal and managed to stall it. Never seen it happen again.
