Hi to all,
I am new to Landyzone and the forum, and i have a bit of a dilemma, the wife and i have found a little piece of heaven in the countryside that we are moving to in the new year, and we have decided to buy a cheap 4x4 for now, the problem is what to go for at the minute its a toss up between a Mitsubishi Pajero or a Landrover Discovery.
I think we are both swaying towards a discovery but i have no idea what engine and model to go for, and basically just need to know of any common faults to look for, as i am pretty clued up on mechanicals etc, any help would be greatly received, hopefully it wont be long before we are up and running in one, as we have only ever one 4x4 before for about three weeks, because it went for repair at a garage and they wrote it off in a accident, which was a frontera.
Cheers in advance Deano.

:welcome2: Dont know alot about Discos other than the 200tdi is a good solid motor with minimum elec...trickery to go wrong but you do need to know where to look for rust trouble spots.....plenty in the Disco section will point you in the right direction. This is a great forum with loads of knowledge and experience but a thick skin and sense of humour is reqd. Great seach tool at the top of the page......good luck:D

Hi
Depends on what you have to spend

Rust free Discos are getting rarer, engine wise you should be ok as long as is has been maintained properly.

I had a 96 discovery 300tdi, that had done 123k, the engine was as good as the day it rolled out the dealers, bar an minor oil leak, which tends to be a land rover thing.

However it was the rust that got the better of it, every mot it needed more welding, until it became clear that the amount of work outweighed keeping the Disco.

If you look at the pajero / shogun route, they seem to be better bodywise and rust isnt a major problem on most, even the older ones, engines also seem to be mostly trouble free, mine never leaked one drop at all, perfectly bone dry.

My honest advice is

1) If you can find a fairly rust free Discovery then go for it, bear in mind you need to look at, inner arches front and rear, sills, boot floor and chassis, and leaking sunroof.

2) If you cant find a rust free one for your money, then get a Pajero or shogun.

I dont think youll regret either if you follow my advice

BUT EITHER WAY MAKE SURE THE ENGINE HAS BEEN SERVICED AS IT SHOULD - WHEN IT SHOULD. Ignoring this could lead to problems with either of your choices.

Hope you find this a helpful, unbiased opinion from someone who has had both.

My first choice would definatly be the Discovery, as long as criteria is met.
