hi there, i am about to buy my next car, the wife is a child minder and wants a 7 seater, i personally do not want a people carrier so was thinking about a Discovery.

What sort of things should i look for and avoid, should high mileages be walked away from, i ony want to spend about £3k max, we dont do many miles so a big petrol engine is fine as i doubt i could live with the speed of the diesel ones.

Also can you fit the extra 2 seats in the boot of a range rover as this would be the preferred option (prefer the looks more than anything) again whats to be avoided on these (i know the air suspension is dodgy sometimes and converting to std coilovers is the way to go - or so i have been told)

There doesnt seem to many 4x4 7 seaters out there in my budget and id rather not have a pajero.

many thanks

there seems to be a few companys that sell the conversions for the RR seats, but why stay away whats the problems....

discovery is your main option you may pick an early disco 2 up for that price but it would be high mileage and fairly ruff around the edges but for 3k youd be looking at real smart disco 1s as for the diesels being slow there not that bad, dont get me wrong there no v8 but me personally id choose a tdi over a v8 anyday :D

the P38 was a dog of a vehicle, with everything controlled by poorly constructed electrics that are prone to failure, a landy mag recently called it the worst landrover ever made

There's nothing wruff about my P38 thanks very much:D seriously though the Rangie isn't really a viable 7 seater, the additional seats do come around but not often enough to rely on being able to get any, and the boot space doesn't lend itself to providing much leg room so once the kiddies approached teens you'd be looking for something with proper rearmost seats. The disco looks like the better option in your situation.

shame about that, so what do i look for in a disco then, are there any buyers guides out there, some common faults easy fixes etc...

Some searching and reading around here should give you just about everything you need. I doubt there's much the disco owners on here haven't experienced with their cars at one time or another. If you still have questions just ask, but do search/read first, peps get a tad testy repeating themselves.
