Hi everyone.

just a note to introduce myself. I work for the FCO and am currently stationed in Jordan.

in July we complete our 4 year tour here and return to the UK for about a month and then we fly out to Addis Ababa in ethiopia for another 3 to 4 year tour.

Currently I have a petrol Pajero in Jordan, when we came out here the LR dealer ad collapsed and no LR's were available. In Addis, recommendation is for a diesel car, as opposed to Jordan where private vehicles MUST be petrol!

Ok so that gives me the opportunity to change the car and get what I want.

I would love a Defender but truth be known, wife will drive more than me and they are beasts in African city traffic taking kids to school etc (Why don't they make one with an optional auto gearbox!) and would only come into its own when we travel (which we intend to do lots of!) into th wild beyond!

So the two options in reality are a Toyota Land Cruiser or a LR Disco 4. I currently use both (and other types) here in Jordan at work and think both are great cars.

heart says LR of course and so that hopefully will be the one we get, duty free from the UK.

Now (mod's if this is not the right place to ask for advice, please let me know and I will move the thread!), I would love some help with a few subtle modifications.

Front aluminium sump guard from LR fitted is £591, is there an alternative which is better? cheaper?

I was looking at an ARB recovery bar, but think thats a bit over the top for my needs, so got a quote from LR for the Protection bar which is £579. I also asked for the front driving lights and the cost is nearly £1200 for TWO spot lamps!

Now that does seem a bit excessive!

want a NATO tow jaw but have been told that no onw does it for the LR4, is that true?

Anyway, I could go on for ever.

Suffice it to say that I am married, have three children with me all at schools locally (one went to boarding school in UK but hated it, so we wont do that again) and really enjoy our travels as a family.

Wife is quite adventurous but does like her comforts! No roof tent camping for her, 5 star hotels yes, but no wrigglies! (We have camped in the desert here, great experience but well off road with young kids is not to be undertaken lightly!).

So Hi all and I look forwards to talking with you all, taking advantage of the collective brain and maybe being able to submit some pics etc of our travels in the new car.

regards.

Alan l.

Welcome. I wouldn't go with an aluminium steering guard. Good steel one mush better for strength.

Other sellers are
Paddocks and craddocks. Terrafirma too for direct sales.

Hi,

That's the question.

As far as I know at the moment they have to be fitted by LR, but I am working on that as some of their kit is just stupidly expensive and I m sure I can get it cheaper elsewhere.
