hi im new here but not new to freelanders as ive owned my 1.8 k for four years now I do all my own repair work and engine work so im no stranger to the headgasket failure and cooling system problems ive just recently done my head again and upgraded the engine cooling fan with a thermostatic capillary system which I can set to come on at what ever temp I choose seems to work really well too im more than happy to help others with problems I also do local mobile mechanics too

lol its a hell of a long way for an oil change
do you run a i.8 freelander as well I was thinking of trading mine in for td4 freelander will have to see what happens with that one as ive just spent a fortune doing the head and the cooling system

Yes, mine is the 1.8. According to an invoice I got when I brought it, it has had the head gasket changed but they didn't do the water pump. A few months ago the pump started leaking badly, my local 4x4 specialist reckons the engine won't be worth the repair. It's only got about 72k on it. Against much advice I dropped a bottle of kseal in it and (touch wood) it's been ok since. It went through its last mot ok, I was expecting it to fail cos the fuel tank cradle is rotted. If it had failed on anything expensive I would have got rid and bought an auto td4 hse. Generally it's been a brilliant car in the year I've owned it, I only paid a grand for it. It's the 3 door model which is a bit of a pain.

mines the 3 door model with the lift off back
and with only 72k on yours its well worth repair really they should have changed the timing belt and water pump when the head was done there not that hard to do
the timing belt went on mine last year it sheared all the teeth off and destroyed the top of the engine bent the valves I rebuilt it last year
then the radiator hose gave up on it a month ago overheated it and blew the headgasket but its all sorted now hopefully mines got 190k on it and still going strong

Mine is also the lift off back but I've never had it off. The belt has been done but according to the invoice, it was done by a motorcyle repairer which doesn't inspire me. I put 4 new tyres on mine as soon as I got it because the walls had cracks, then I had a new vcu and bearings for peace of mind. Apart from that the air con compressor is knackered but a new one is pretty expensive.
