Hi all,

The forum asks you to introduce yourself after signing up, so here I go:

Defender 110, ex-MoD 1986, owner since about 2009. Since then have taken the car for a year long drive through Africa. Recently pulled *all* the wiring and replaced it with new home made + home made ECU. So any wiring related questions, shoot. ;-)

Located in central Netherlands.

cheers,
Stu.

I took some pics and documented most of it, but bear in mind this is a 1986 MoD 24V vehicle, so it is somewhat specific.

It went in steps, my original goal was just to replace the old-style fusebox, but as I was pulling wiring I didn't like the wire quality and the fact that pretty much everything was directly wired to switches without relays.
One thing leads to another and now there's virtually no original wire left. In retrospect it's not soo hard, you can remove everything within a day easily.

Hardest part is rewiring (obviously), and most of my time went into making sure to cut cables to the correct length (measure 3 times and still cut too long/short) and researching stuff like connectors, grommets, etc.. I ended up using mostly AMP's SuperSeal connectors. I also used wire cables (like the LappKabel Ölflex stuff), instead of separate wires, which makes the whole thing neat and reliable.

I stuck a fuse/relay box under the passenger seat (LHD car) which communicates over CAN to another box behind the steering wheel. This way I only need to have a big power cable to that box and run most power lines to the back and front of the car. Very straight forward. At the moment I am struggeling with some problems in that box, but decided to outsource that problem to someone who's now redesigning the PCB. ... it's a long story, I guess that when it's all in place I should do a write up here on the forum ...
