Hi all. Long time since I had a Landy but at last I am the owner of a Discovery 1 v8. In excellent conditon too.
My last Landy was a Series 3 Station Wagon 2.25 back in the late '80's but I'm glad I've got this one - not much rust but will need some welding. Mechanically it has not been looked at properly for about 12 years - so a lot to do as it is running very rough. It did past an MOT though...
So far I've replaced the idle/step valve, coolant temperature sensor, (it had a new MAF a short whole ago), new spark plugs, two spark plug leads were knackered, vacuum pipes had loads of splits, cleaned the crankcase vent filter, exhaust back box, maybe more! Still nearly stalling when warm.
I've got two new O2 sensors to put on next...
I'm in a conserve and preserve phase at the moment - I don't want any rust to get worst, so been going round it, de-rust, rust converter, red oxide, sealant on joints.
Also had leaks from the rear sunroof even though the seller "fixed" it and put a new headliner in! New stainless screws all round the sunroof tray and seal the screws in. The sunroof drain pipes were pointing upwards so were creating a U-bend effect too, which caused the rain to pool in the tray. Fingers crossed.
I've had the sill trim off to look at rust, so replaced the plastic fasterners with stainless rivnuts and button head screws.
Jobs on list include siezed front calipers and play in track rod ends, clean underside and seal, shocks are shot, original radio buttons are missing, rubbers on windows, etc, etc.
I'll try to upload a few piccies too:

Hi and welcome!

Nice disco. Not many V8’s around. It’s worth getting it waxoyl’d to keep the rust at bay. Gloucestershire’s roads aren’t good, I reckon they fill the many potholes with salt!

Thanks for the welcome. Luckily my Disco had all its life in London which should mean less salt exposure - and low miles helps too. Low miles with less than 12k in last 12 years too, but virtually no maintenance for that time - only absolute minimun for MOT.
Love V motors. Didn't want a diesel so took a while to find a good v8.
Happy :)
Maybe I should start a thread. I should have started taking pics earlier.
Finding some rust. I'll have to dig out my welder and get it working!

Your rear wheel arches look miraculously clean. but i can't believe it has an MOT with all the things you listed like stuck calipers and track rod endplay!
Mine is much the same colour but manual, and has LPG fitted. I cannot drive it as it needs certification which it didn't have when I bought it and I need legal insurance. So busy at the mo I have yet to take the tanks off and get the numbers off them plus clean it all up and put them back on so the pernickerty bugre will give me a cert!
But they do drive lovely don't they? Bit different to my 300 tdi!
Best of luck with all you have to do!
Welcome to a shrinking and quite elite club, the D1 v8s I mean! Landyzone just grows and grows!

Thank you. I did not mention the MOT was done AFTER I agreed to buy it; the exhaust back box almost fell off on the way home; the petrol tank leaked as soon as I filled it; fog lamp lens nearly fell off... I'm sure it will "drive lovely" once the steering and suspension is sorted!!!
But I still love it :)
Though I love the idea of an off roader I think I will try to keep it as original as poss.

Saw this link to ThisIsMoney web site. https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money...5-years-Land-Rover-gruelling-expeditions.html
And saw this DIsco from the London-Paris Trek 1998:

Does anyone know the relationship between the R xxx HAB numbers and Land Rover? As mine is one! Is there any register of Land Rovers?
Cheers

You're better off asking questions in the relevant technical sections of the forum rather than the Introduce Yourself section ;)
