Hi all.

Just purchased a 95 discovery 300Tdi as my Cayenne got stuck in the snow and thought i would jump on here to check things out and learn of any problems that may arise with it.

I already have my first problem though.

The disco needed some new tyres and the local tyre shop man reccomended fitting 235/85 R16's to it as thats what he has on his defender. He assured me they would fit so i ordered them, BFG Mud Terrain 235/85/R16 KM2, and he fitted them on Friday. During the fitting process i kept asking him if they would fit as they seemed to big for the arches but he assured me they would. On leaving the shop they were catching and rubbing and bottoming out. I have now ordered a 2" lift kit which is being fitted on Monday in the hope that it will sort out the problems.

After further research it looks like i will be getting my Dremmel out and cutting the rear wheel arches and front and rear bumpers to accomodate the new wheels.

If anyone has any advise on how much to cut, if indeed anything needs cutting, and from where. Is a new bump stop needed aswell and does the steering stop need altering.

If there are any guides available it would be appreciated.

With a 2" lift you shouldn't need to cut anything. and 235/85/16's as you've already discovered don't fit on a standard disco. I'd be inclined to insist that the garage remove the tyre and fit 235/70/16s instead. or even 225/70/16s. at their expense of course since they have supplied you with parts that are not fit for purpose.
 
yes i agree i would make them put the right size tyres on, that way you dont need to spend hundreds more on a lift kit
 
I undertsand that i should take them back but they look so good and will give me an extra 1.5" of clearance so i will stick with them. I have already ordered the lift kit and it arrived today so i have already spent the money for that.

There is conflicting info about the need for cutting and i just wondered if anyone has a set of 235/85/16' on their disco and if indeed any cutting is needed.

@Sean yeah the cayenne is **** off road, probably something to do with the tyres and traction control sapping all the power. When i got stuck i was pulled out by a disco and thought that i should get one for emergencies and a bit of fun off road as i have some friends who do it.

I have ordered the following kit

four Bearmach Blue Heavy Duty Springs, a pair of front turret rings and four Pro Comp ES9000 gas shock absorbers with black neoprene boots. I have also got the stainless steel brake hoses.

Hope they are gonna be ok.

i have been looking around the web and there is a thing called a camel cut that was done to camel trophy discos to stop the wheels hitting the rear wheel arches. Does anyone have any experience of this.

ye ive done it, just cut a slice out the back arches but im cuttin an extra 2 inches off the arches anyway
also do a search on here about camel cuts theres several posts and someone did a how to guide

It mainly involves trimming the rear half of the rear wheel arches. If you google it there plenty of threads on various forums explaining what needs doing. But with a 2" lift I doubt you'll need to do a camel cut.
 
Thanks for all the help guys.

The 2" lift is now on thanks to Chris and there doesnt seem to be any problems with rubbing on the back arch so hopefully no camel cut needed.

I will post some pics when i dig out my camera and will look forward to some green laning in the near future.
