Hi and arghh, catastrophic steering problems

Firstly hi
been around a bit but just registerdd


I have a 1991 110 200 TDI and over the 4 years or so of ownership it has been great

I was due to go away this weekend and the landy was first choice
but

As I pulled of the drive I heard a faint clunk and the steering stopped working
I looked underneath and saw this


so after an hour of jacking and re-jacking and swearing I had the Landy off the road and parked up and away I went in the Astra.

Tonight after work I had a look and took the top of the steering box off to find this


Anyone had this before?

I have a disco that is scrap, could I take this shaft out of that one to fix it or would it be better to swap the whole box?
