This is not a stupid question if you don't have an owners manual.

You can move the selector into or out of sports mode at any time.

If you haven't a handbook - it's easy to get one on-line. Let us know.

Oh and welcome, by the way.

hi thanks for replying just introduced my self
i have the hand book but it does not say if you have to bstopped to engage the sports mode. had fronteras before, first one you had to stop to select four wheel drive and reverse to deselect second you could shift on the fly

OK mate - enjoy your Freelander.

I very rarely use the Sport mode - I've only found it useful on hairpin bends in the Alps.

Welcome.

When in D you can move to Sport mode when moving or stationary. When in Sport mode you’ll see the word “sport” appear on the mileage display. This mode will request the engine/auto process to accelerate faster, hold gears longer to achieve better acceleration before changing up, and drops sooner to a lower gear if “kick down” is required (when yer puts yer foot down). Once in Sport mode you can push the gear lever forwards or backwards. This puts it into manual shift mode. You can then manually change up or down gears. If it thinks it can’t make a gear change and your trying to put it into too higher a gear, then it won’t change. Move gear lever left to put back into sport mode.

As your new to auto’s… Best to put it in either D or R and when you feel it wants to move, then accelerate. Keep it in gear until you stop, then take it out of gear (not whilst moving). When stationary for longer than say 10 seconds, take it out of D or R. |All this will save wear on yer auto.
