Hi all,
I have noticed over the past few days that my 300tdi discovery has become hesitant when cold but as soon as it's warm it is fine and pulls well.

I have cleaned the sedemiter out and have a new fuel filter to put on have also put a new air filter in. I couldn't get the lift pump to pump by hand the other day could this be a problem? Anyone got any ideas? It's one of those silly things that annoys me but as soon as it's warmed up it's a dream to drive.

Cheers Matt

hi my name is eric ive just joined and i had a fault like that on me dis and found it to be my glow plugs

doubt its lift piump, if you rotate the engine i bet you will find it will pump.

is it auto? are you trying to run it straight from cold? i have an auto and i let her idle for a few 2 mins ( lets the oils get round the engine and my lil electric heater clear the screen a little) and then i go i dont try to push her as she is cold as it dont seem to do much but drink fuel and once a bit warmer she runs like a dream.

when did you last change oil and filters?

if its an auto the box oil needs to warm up before she drives better,

cheers baz

It's a manual discovery. It's when i start it in the morning or later in the day after it's been standing a few hours and got cold, it's fine when it's warm or after a few miles of driving.

Only bought it just over a week ago chap said it was due an oil change so thats next on my list.

I wondered if it could be the tappets or injectors as it sounds tappety when cold another thought was the braid covered pipes that go on top of the injectors a couple of those are past their best but not sure what these do.

ok braded pipes sounds like the leak of pipe is it black brade going across and connecting all 4 injectors? if it is you can buy a leakoff pipe set from ebay or get some pipe from a motor factors for a few quid. (it wont be that causeing issue)

is the breathe pipe ok no air getting in or blocked?

dose it have an egr valve on the turbo? (has a steel pipe going into the the pipe between the intercooler and the intake manifold) it will help to blank it off.

tapet noise usualy cos its on cold start and oil needs to get round the engine but may need ajusting, would recomend cambelt if you dont have the truck history as tapping noise can be due to worn belt.

first start with oils and filters, dont forget the sedimentor near fule tank on inside of chassis rail, (dont use the bleed screw)

filters:
oil
air
fuel

change diff oils and transferbox (ep 80/90 gl4 grade min)

change gear oil atf dexron II ( yes atf oil in a manual)

see if that helps

you will find it takes a while for the 300tdi to warm up as its a big water jacket and deisel is less volitile fule compaired to petrol so wont warm up as fast and it helps if the oils are warm and less damage to the engine.

change the coolant if it has mo coolent in it change the thermastat as that will cause issues warming the old girl up if stuck open, when refilling fill her up with de-ionised water that will help keep lime scale and oxidisation out of the cooling system.

hope this helps
cheers baz
