1990 classic, 3.9 v8 auto as most of you know.

When it shifts down gears on the overun (unless you brake very hard) it clunks underneath, I cannot pinpoint where from.

The specialist who rebuilt the box says its play on the front diff and its changing sharper now the box is new which makes it louder.

Before I had the box done it used to clunk when you were going from forward to reverse when parking (it still does) but I always thought it was the transfer box.

I would really like to know which it is before I fork out yet more cash, any ideas?

I am waiting for a stepper to arrive to try that as it doesnt seem to do it when the idle speed is a bit higher, but I cant be sure as my idle speed is a bit random lol.

I dont think anything can be too close to failure as it would have broken when I was trying to tow that forklift yesterday!:D

If its clunking on the move i'd start with checking out the propshaft uj's,I'm in the process of changing my front radius arm bushes which are giving me a clunking noise but not only when changing gear.

Its just on the downshift unless breaking hard, I had the ujs checked by a monkey mechanic , just thinking I cant rely on there diagnosis!

If I lay underneath whats the best way to check the transfer box and the diff and uj for play? seems you can only trust your own eyes these days!

Yeah i have done the grease and the bolts are tight , i just want a full proof way of testing for play in the diff and transfer box themselves.

BTW it was the rude coments bit aimed at u m8 lol:p

Dude that is far too much work!

U wanna come and do it 4 me

8 fooking bolts, you lazy clunge lol.
get a laying down board with wheels, get the missus under
the motor on it, tell her to hold on tight and see if she can
see where the noise is coming from.

Not sure she will go for that m8 lol,

If I put it in park and take off the handbrake , try and spin the brake drum and I can move it will that denote play in the t/box or will the axels being staionary stop it moving?
