Firstly, let me say thanks to all the contributing members of Landyzone for potentially making my mrs' life hell for the next few years. This forum is a mine of info, which will probably cost me a lot of time and money in Landy - related nonsense!
I'm a few weeks into researching a new vehicle for the good lady, something to replace her current motor (1 series BMW) which was useful in and around town and up and down the motorway, but since we're out in the sticks now it seems pretty useless. She has convinced herself that around these parts, a small Jimny or a Rav4 would be best, especially in the winter when the BMW wouldn't get off the drive without chains. Whilst I appreciate that the Jimny and Rav4 both have their place and relative comfort/economy/refinement, they aren't much use when it comes to boot space, which is pretty critical when you need it for the numerous things a largeish family requires. We also have a small woodland that keeps us busy (and a Ferguson TED20 that keeps me happily fettling!) But that's a few miles away, so the choice of a Defender seems a good idea for using here too, especially for trailering wood back home.
To this end, I've politely suggested that, provided she feels comfortable driving one (and reversing it!), a Defender 90 would be a wise choice. I have no qualms about her driving capabilities in all honesty, in fact, she's probably safer and more able than me, which makes an impending purchase all the more likely.
I've worked with Defender 110s for a few years now, as they are the vehicle of choice for towing our rigs and trailers at work, but they're all relatively modern in comparison to what our £7k budget will allow us to buy, I'm ideally looking out for hard top 200tdi or 300tdi, based upon reputation and comparative simplicity more than anything else. It's doubtful that we'd get an example with a galv chassis for that money, but who knows what's around the corner eh?
