firstly .. hello:)
secondly help pls! My 1984 turbo diesel 90 needs a new engine and being the complete landrover novice i am i could really use any advice as to what to replace it with, where from and what you'd expect it to cost. keeping costs down to a minimum is a must, oh and before anyone asks about to existing engine all the gearrage has said to me is it needs replacing, any help would be really appreciated

have they said why it needs replacing?

whats supposed to be the problem with it? is the garage working on the car? will the garage do the engine swap?

cheers mate

where and how ?

200 TDi would be the best replacement bud definately

try and find a good second hand one on the internet (breakeryard part finding websites)

meanwhile have a look on here to see what you need to change it over if anything (use search before starting new thread) as it has been done quite a few times

then get quotes for engine swap

there will be plenty of gargages quiet at the mo

garage. Give someone a grand and they'll do it! (Take it to your landrover indy) - or buy an engine for a couple of hundred quid and do it yourself and get a world of pain!

My 90's old TD engine died a couple of months ago too and I'm currently in the process of fitting a 200TDi out of a Disco.

If you're fairly handy with a spanner then you can do it DIY. Although I'm no mechanic then I'm not finding things too bad with the help of Landyzone and a few "how-to's" on the web. At the moment I think I've spent about 600 on all the bits needed including buying a whole Disco for 350 but I reckon I should get most of this back from the parts I can sell on from the Disco/old engine. I've only really been working on it as and when I can but reckon I'll have taken about 4 full days to do it in the end - that's if my final push goes well anyway!

Here are some links on the process...

As has been said - sticking a 200tdi in it is relatively easy, even for an average DIY mechanic. The only 'specialist' tools you'll need (I.E. ones you probably won't have access to) are an engine hoist and a hydraulic jack. Both of these can be hired from any decent hire shop (HSS etc). The 200 tdi engine is said to be the best Land Rover ever made, and as I said they go into pre-defender 90s and 110s without many modifications.

There are a few decent guides about that will give you a heads up on exactly what needs changing, but off the top of my head it's:

- Manifold - Turbo on Discovery is low down whereas on Defender it's high up. Can be bought from places like Steve Parker or even eBay
- Rad/Intercooler hoses - again can be bought easily.
- Temp sender

Maybe a couple other niggly bits but I think that's the main things.
The total cost for this (including buying the discovery and all parts) is typically about £500, plus you've got the Discovery to do what you please with (break it, scrap it sell it etc).

If you're getting it done for you, you'll be looking to pay about a grand all in all.

It's definitely worth doing though, for a starting point just have a look through fleabay for some nice old rusty Discos :D
