hi iv been told if i replace my diff with rangy diff and my transfer-box with a dicso it would make it higher geared in high but when i drop it into low it would be the same? is this true and is the any other way of makin it higher geard? i have a landy 90 with a defender lt77 g-box and a disco 200tdi engine?

Not sure about the diff - but the disco transfer is 1.222:1 instead of 1.410:1 so yes that would up the gearing.

Cheapest way to up the gearing is fit some bigger wheels and tyres - 235/85/16 is pretty simple on a defender - gives you about a 10% increase in overall gearing.

Cheers,

the gearing is brill when i go off road it just right but i would like to lift it a bit for the road bring me fuel cost down a bit!! on average im doin about 25-29 mpg is that bout right or will i get more if i change the transfer box?

rangie axles are no different from defender ones as far as gearing goes as far as i know but a rangie/disco tranny box will help.

forget about better fuel economy , it aint going to happen , think your self lucky really , im getting 24 mpg max and when i was on petrol i was getting 18 - 20.

You'll get 13% increase, by the maths, using a disco transfer box, but that won't translate into a real world economy gain of 13% unless you drive at the same speeds you used to (not the speed shown on the speeo though - that will be out by 13%) - aerodynamics aren't exactly a defenders strong point.

In the 'real world' you'll probably only get a 5% economy gain from doing either - although it will cruise a lot more comfortably at motorway speeds.

Worth bearing in mind, with either of the above, if you increase the gearing without boosting the torque the car will accelerate slower than before. You probably won't notice around town, but you will on motorway slip roads and climbing long hills.

Cheers,

adz in all fairness it should take off like a rocket fella, the ratios gain as the gears go up , what it will do is not climb hills as easy in the gear it used to i.e you will have to drop down a gear where you didnt before.
ken110 put a rangie tranny box on his 200tdi and he reckons it was well worth it.
higher cruising speed , faster speeds through the gears (longer inbetween gear changes ) but crappier on hills than normal.

im after an early 110 tranny box for my 90 cos ive only got a 19j and it wont drive a disco box.

have a look here Ashcroft Transmissions then click on technical information for tranny box ratios. youd be supprised just how many there is.

As Rob said, I put one in mine..and in my opinion yup! they're worth it....instead of climbing a hill in 4th with the old one I'm using 3rd...same revs and speed but 3rd runs out of oomph to early and there's a flat spot in the LT77 which means there's just not quite enough revs to get 4th. The way around this has been to welly it up the hills. Not too hard in a 200tdi but you do end up having to think in supertanker terms. especialy when you're clogging up a hill in 4th doing about 45 and some joker pulls out in front of you:D
