help !!

a little stuck on this and just looking for any sound advice
the rubber gater on the front cv joint ,just infront of thr ird on the prop has failed,but what i can't understand is that i have lost some oil,about a 1/4 of a pint,is this normal lube oil in the cv or is there somthin more sinister in there
any thoughts?? cheers chaps

grease in joints will be a very dark grey colour the front prop grease does seem to have less viscosity

Thanks LR the oil thats come out of the cv looks like dirty engine/gearbox oil ,same thickness,just wondering if its possible that oil could get into the cv joint from the ird box and with having an airtight boot on the oil would remain in there!

no ird is a seprate, the only thing you need to worry about is the fact that front prop cv joints are not a servicable item, so you wont be able to buy any parts to fix it, so its either a good bodge req or a front propshaft

When I bought a second hand complete prop shaft/VCU assembly, the front cv joint had in it what looked more like heavy dark brown engine oil, rather than the typical moly type greases that go into Subys etc. If the cv is still oK you should be able to buy an after market "boot", and fit it yourself (carefully), without having to buy the whole drivetrain as LR will try to sell you!

as stated in previous post the front gaiter is not sold seperatly, not at a deaaler any way, but as ian says hopefully you can get an aftermarket one

I bought an after market boot from an LR/Jag (non dealer) specialist maintenance shop in Tassie who gets them from a CV joint refurbishment house.
With squillions of Freelanders in UK, there must be someone doing CV joint refurbishing, and at a price difference of several hundred quid between a boot and new propshaft, there is a fair incentive to do a bit of hunting.
