okay so took it out today, temp started climbing and went in to limp mode.
i know it was low on coolant, i was on the way to Halfrauds to get some,it spat a load of water through the pipe on the header.
I let it cool down re filled and drove it home with no problems. Took it out again to go to my local lr mechanic, didnt make it. Temp started to rise again, engine shut down again, i turned around again then the temp gauge dropped to the bottom and engine went back to normal. Drove home.
It drove home yesterday about 50 miles from the sellers house with no issues.
It had a recon enginge end of 2013
All new blue pipes
And if someone says anything about HG i am going to burn it

Any ideas please

Classic head gasket or cracked head symptoms on a td5.
You could try a new expansion cap as there cheap but normally once they overheat the heads gone

Make sure to bleed it properly, as per the manual.

also it is worth getting a new exp tank cp as they can fail and not hold pressure.

Cheers

Well that was fun owning a TD5, purchase it on Saturday, head gasket went on Monday sold for scrap on Tuesday.
I think me and the green oval are not getting on together at the moment.

personally, if i bought this Monday and the HG went Tuesday, im afraid i would be ringing the people up to return it
and if no joy county court, because your not telling me they did not notice this before they sold it
and you cant just sell a car now and think thats the end of it, if it goes tits up its tuff, it doesn't work like that anymore
unless you bought it from friends or you have been told it may have HG problems on the day

Nothing wrong with autos......

Mine has done 160,000 with no problems (other than losing all its oil through the cooler pipe once).

So did mine!

And the repair chap thought the box was toast as there was no drive.

I had stuck it in neutral for towing!

Had to get it repaired as it was at work not home.

okay so I have looked at the 52 plate today. Loads of work done including re con engine. Up graded brakes. etc etc
ACE pipe needs replacing, bit tatty but will polish up, leaking sunroof and a couple of bits need replacing which he has supplied. Chassis has been welded.

The green one I made an offer yesterday but some one else beat me on the price, they have now offered it to me if I want it?

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGH
Thoughts please

ACE is affordable to repair, and not that difficult, most difficult bit is remembering what components are called.

I keep forgetting Banjo, not union, not onion, not terminal, not round thingy, but Banjo.

That would have made a good donor engine for the snapped crank one in TD5 area.

no mate done it last year concerning a vw bus that was supposedly 100% prefect, turned out it was a bodge job once it was took in for a service 4 days after purchase called the bloke up told him the results, he just laughed and came out with a similar reply to yours 5 weeks later in county court awarded my 8k back for the bus and a further £1200 in costs . the rules on buying and selling privately all changed a few years back you cant sell a duff motor and think tuff **** on the buyer private sales now more or less have the same rules as dealers now
