Help with Safari snorkel on my 300TDI

OK, I have a 300TDI Disco, and have been given a Safari Snorkel off a 200TDi Disco. The Snorkel is the same for both, but the fitting kit inside the engine bay is different, as the air boxes are different. I do not have the fitting kit for either engine, but I need the fitting kit for the 300TDi.

None of the suppliers will sell me the kit alone, insisting that I buy a new snorkel complete, does anyone out there have the kit I need to fit my snorkel wothout me having to buy a complete new kit?

I live in South Wales, and I have no problem travelling a reasonable distance to collect. Thanks

Is it not just a pipe to connect from the snorkel to the air filter housing?

No, the knock out on the inner wing is partially obscured by the airbox on the 300 TDi. the intake on mine is at the front of the inner wing, so there must be a conversion for the airbox to turn it or something, I havent seen one fitted from an interior viewpoint to actually see how it connects to the air intake system

has anyone got a piccy of the contents of a safari snorkel kit or a piccy of the engine bay with the snorkel fitted?

On the 300Tdi Safari there's a really convoluted piece of plastic extrusion that takes the air round from the back (outlet side) of the airbox and into the front inlet side .. but it doesn't use the standard inlet, you blank that off and cut a square (ish) section out of the front of the airbox and screw/silicone seal the Safari piece in .. it's a right abortion of a system IMHO!!

Mate's got one, I'll take some pictures if I see him this weekend coming.

so what you are saying is that if he got shot of the standard filter and fitted one of these he could plumb it into the snorkel then and avoid needing to spend £200 on the whole kit?

Probably ... Possibly ... maybe ... dunno if it'll fit, but in essence yes. If you don't use the stock airfilter you could use any flexible tube to connect the safari snorkel external bit to the air inlet.

That's what I'm going to do with mine .. eventually ... just need a length of flexible tube now, but I'm too tight to pay ebay prices for it as I'll be using thrown away 3" drain downpipe etc.

Thanks Paul D, that picture really helps, now I know what it is I need to get, if anyone reading this has such a fitting kit they want to sell, then please let me know. I looked at that link of yours Ratty, that looks like it would work, will have to check the pipe diameter on my disco. cheers.

they do pipe enlargers and reducers for em too so it should make it easier to fit. Odenne fitted one to his td 90 after having a 200tdi lump dropped into it.

No worries.

You'll be lucky, they're like hens teeth .... and no-one will sell them separately.

'course, if it's too much trouble, just send me the snorkel, then you don't need to worry about it ... I'm sure I could make use of it !!!

rightyo, na, I think I will hang onto it for a bit, gotta keep trying, but I really dont want to go buying a brand new one now, when I got half of one in the garage, ****ing me off it is!!

I 'may' sell the internal bits for my Safari snokel, whih just so happens to be for a 300TDi Disco.

As Paul D has already stated, it's a right abortion, a really **** poor design IMHO.

When I fitted my template it was mm perfect, I made dam sure of that, but the intenal tube, which has far too man 90 degree bends in it I reckon, fouls the washer bottle and crushes the top hose for the rad.

I'm thinking of trying to turn my airbox through 180 degrees and getting a bit of piping to run straight into it.

I will keep you posted. Even if I do fit the Safari internal pipe, then I do still have the template available FOC. All you'll have to do is pay the postage.

Could you swap the air filter box for a 200TDI air filter box (it's a completley different shape, a big cylinder) then get rid of that daft shaped moulded thing and attach the two using some 3" flexi pipe, sealant and jubilee clips??

That's what I'm thinking of doing when I get around to putting a second battery in mine.

Too late, I've fitted it now.

Even though I was 99.9% certain that I had fitted the template and drilled the holes correctly, during the trial fit of the daft shaped moulded thing, it didn't seem to line up quite right, catching the top hoses of the rad, the airbox to turbocharger pipe, and fitting into the airbox at a daft angle.

I decieded to give it a go anyway. One session with the dremmal later, (or rarther a cheapo Clarke one from Machine Mart), and the daft moulded plastic thing was attatched to the airbox.

Upon attatching the whole thing to the car, to my amazement it actually went on up, only pushing the rad top hoses up slightly. Looks a bit of an abortion with my ultra crap siliconing skils though. hey ho, at least it should be waterproof.



The biggest bugger of the job was finding even more rust between the wheelarch and the inner front wing. You know, if one day I found the plastics or the glass rusting on that car, I wouldn't be in the least bit suprised.
