Help with my sluggish disco proble if you can please?

I've recently got a Discovery 2.5 TDI M reg, 165000 on the clock, well looked after, full service history up until about 10,000 ago. (Had a cambelt and a mini service 4000 ago). My problem is when I start it from cold, it really struggles to pull away (e.g) when I started it earlier today, I had to reverse (struggled a bit), drop backward down a slope, then drive forward. It nearly stalled, there was hardly anything there, I had to try and keep the revs quite high for it to pull away up the slope which was difficult cos it was still cold! (Very sluggish), it kicked into life in 1st gear after a few yards but as soon as I changed to second, it just stopped pulling and I had to drop down to 1st again! I also noticed this yesterday when it was warm, it would drive fine but if I came to a steep hill I would have to drop right down to first sometimes cos it would stop pulling in second. Can anyone help me out please? It's a lovely Disco but now I'm paranoid that I've bought one with a dodgy turbo or some sort of fuel starvation issue? I'm not very mechanical, I had a 200 series Disco a few years back and I don't remember having these probs with it? I don't know if it is normal and it just feels like something is wrong because I've been used to driving a 2.0 HDI car for the last 3 years that starts and runs straight away with no sluggishness what-so-ever! Any help or info will be much appreciated folks. I've been waiting ages for another Landy, so I hope it's not something to alarming!?!?!?!??!:doh:

check the turbo pressure by squeezing the top inlet hose while yer doris revs it up. and change the fuel filter and air filter, and clean out your sedimentor.

Sedimentor???

If they feel at all soft you need to take them off and check them as they can also collapse internally.

you'll need to get under the car at the back wheel and look up, inside the chassis rail there is a bowl.

That is the sedimentor, if you have a jellyfish living in there it can cause fueling problems...

A search on 'ere will turn up a method.

Do you mean the inlet pipes can go soft and collapse?

Thanks so far to everyone who's trying to help out... I will have a look at the sedimenter tomorrow and have a look at the inlet pipes (If I can work out what they are )... So it doesn't sound like a turbo prob or anything expesive then????

Exactly.

Nearside, hose going from top of the engine inlet manifold (Bit alloy box under the black plastic rocker cover top) forwards to the intercooler outlet. It might have a brach off it going to a valve (EGR valve) that's mounted on the exhaust manifold.

Also check the air filter, also on the nearside, a large black box with hose going directly to turbo. Take top off remove flat air filter and check it isn't gunged up, and that the hose going to the turbo is clear. Similarly the inlet from outside to airbox might also be gunged up.

All fairly obvious stuff, but well worth checking it all first.

Thanks paul... Will have a good look under the bonnet tomorrow and at the sedimenter if it's not to dark when i get home!

You didn't sell him a dud did ya ?

I guess he needs to bypass the sedimenter and fit a new fuel filter before he does owt else.

i was bidding on one in ebay, full service history leather interior etc, but some one outbid by £50 at the last minute and being a bit miffed i said to my wife,
i hope the bugger who bought it got a pile of c**P. lol

now then , owned the same spec disco for five years i called it the slug cruise all day 70 80mph hit a hill slowed down to a crawl, did all the things thats been said twice over just got used to it pulling away from lights ect plenty revs.mine was a manual?( never make a getaway car)good luck

Yeah sorry... I'm not very mechanical, have little experience, hardly any tools or an area to properly work in, so when I laid underneath my disco the other day playing with a filthy sedimenter in a claustrophobic damp, covered in ****e type way, I gave up! I did check the inlet pipes, a couple of them looked quite new and were puffing out when I revved the engine, so there was no air being restricted but I didn't wanna chance taking the sedimenter apart and not being able to get it back on / spill diesel all over the rd. I have found a Landrover specialist that I might take it to on Saturday. I'll leave it with them for the day, they can test drive it and clean out or replace the sedimenter.

I also want them to quote me on welding the tops of the inner wings (under bonnet) cos I don't think it will pass it's next MOT in August with the holes! I also want a quote on a full service and cam belt change. Any ideas (ball park figure) what they are likely to charge for those things to be done? I don't wanna get ripped off and can't really afford to have any of it done but love the Landy and wanna keep it for a long time to come.

Most of what you're asking them to do is labour, so final cost could be anything ... but I'd figure about £300 +

Would love to have a go at some stuff myself, if I had the space, tools and the bravery!!!:doh:
