Hiya all!

Im having a bit of trouble pinpointing a Rattle/ Chattering noise which is possibly coming from the gearbox!

The noise is at its most loudest at about 10mph (When coming up to a juction/lights) I know its nothing to do with the engine as its also there when free wheeling with the clutch down!

Recently i had a few drips of oil coming from the gearbox/transfer box? And is showing a 'wet area' as a result.

I have attactched some pics to try and explain a bit better. Its a 4 speed, Im am told this an LT95 gearbox but please could anyone confirm this from the pics!

If the is not enough/no oil in the box would this cause this kinda noise? Where would i check the levels if it is posible?

Cheers, Scott

Have you checked the universal joints and the prop shaft splines? If you hear it mainly when costing along that sounds like something is loose and thats it flailing about because its not under load.

It may be the gearbox yes but check the basics (and cheapest) things first.

What motor have you got?....4speed??..is it an early v8 110? I think your noise may be from handbrake ...they do this if overadjusted/or,seized/broken spring etc.....as for oils get a 'Haynes' manual.[you'll need it!] or check previous threads/postings Good luck

Thanks guys,

How do you check the prop shaft splines and how do i know if theyve had it?

Yes its a 90 with an early V8 from a RR Classic!

Scott

Look at the prop, there is a part that might have a cover over it, or not and you will see if allows the prop to expand/compress grab each side and twist them, wiggle them, if you get a load of play then the prop is on it's way out - but it's the UJ's that give more of the noise you describe. There is a spider in the middle of the UJ, it should hold both parts of the prop shaft together with no lateral play, they should also transfer movement from one half of the prop to another without any slack.

Does your hand brake get hot after a long drive? That would indicate a stuck expander holding the shoe onto the drum or a stuck linakge etc.

My handbrake wasnt working until yesterday, i took it apart to adjust as it wasnt making contact with the drum. It still doesnt seem to be 100% tho!

Could this be the cause? There were no lose parts, if any it were seized up.

I do have slight play in the front prop when i grab hold of it and shake it sideways. The play is where it goes into the diff. Is this normal or should there be no play at all?

Iv just checked for play in the splines and there is none there at all. I have also checked the middle of the UV for play and none there either .

If there was a problem with the diff (enough to cause this amount of noise) would it be more than just a noise?

How load is the noise - This occured twice for me - one was the handbreak drum catching - did you adjust the cable end or the other end of the pads (the square peg stiking out the other side?

The other time was when the transfer box emptied out of oil one the way up the M1/M6, and then decided to destroy the midle bearing inside the box - it can be driven like this for some time as the splines hold it all together - I know this from experience - as i managed to drive 350 miles back to London without this - However you will most likely notice some abrupt halts for the first few miles as the remains of the bearing make there way through the cogs inside - BTW this is new transfer box time :(

***** The other thing to check, which will help pin down the problem******

Get it up to speed, and put the transfer box into N ( after putting the main box into N), and see if the noise occures when free wheeling. Then put the main box into a gear and see if the noise reoccures (if it goes away). This will allow you to see if it is the transfer box/handbreak/drive train or the mainbox are making the noise - obviously if it is the main box it should go away if the transfer box is in N and the clutch is down as nothing it turning. - Not it is important to make sure you try it with the clutch up and down as parts of the main box still turn when in N with the clutch up.

If the noise still occures with everything in N and the clutch down (or engine off - stearing and breaks!!!) while moving then it will be the drive train/transferbox/handbreak

EDIT :- make sure that you put the main box back into N (or atleast put the clutch down and wait a couple of seconds) before you re-engague H as there is no syncromesh on the transfer box!

Thnks mate!

I have finally pin pointed what was the cause!

It was a UV joint on the rear prop-shaft, I noticed a lot of play in there so i bought a new one for 20 quid. Took off me prop and had it fitted at me local garage for a fiver.

There no rattling noise at all now! Bliss!!

Hi guys wondering if you can help
i have a 1984 ex army (NZ) 109 3500cc v8
it has a noisy main box i think when its idling the noise is there and when you press the clutch in the noise goes away and when you release clutch back the noise comes it not really just a bit of a grinding noise.
I haven't changed the oil yet or added an additive yet as i was considering taking it to a mechanic and getting the bearing replaced big cost though about $1500. Is the noise normal with LR and should i just wait until the noise gets really bad before spending the dosh, or is there the possibility of the bearing falling apart and destroying my gear box.
please advise

Cheers
