Hi guys, still looking to buy a Defender but I'm quite in-experienced. Having read loads of guides I'm still non the wiser.
Which one should I get;
300i
Td5
2.4 TDCI.

I have around £11k to spend and will used as follows, every day car, to tow a horse box, and get through the odd muddy field.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

any will do all of those , there are many arguments for and against any version , buy the one in best condition , balancing visual against year and mileage . HTSH

If you can take a person with defender experience with you , with the requisite mech knowledge .

I go for condition over getting the newest one, I got a clean non abused 2005 110 double cab TD5 in October for £12k, they are all overpriced everywhere you look, the dealer wanted £15k plus vat so I pointed out some minor issues with the truck, as it's not hard to find something wrong with a Defender and started waving £12k in cash at him, done deal! Even got the poor sap to deliver it 60 miles home for free too.

Do you want a 80 or a 110, and what sort of body configuration do you want?

Yup, it always pays to haggle. If you have the money to hand and aren't reliant on loan or finance you can often get a grand or two off, or get a few extras like a service or MOT thrown in.

I would say for the budget, probably a TD5. I don't like the TDCI dash, it makes it feel very cramped inside.

I have a TDi and whilst it is more user serviceable I would still have a TD5, mostly for the noise and power. Though they do use more fuel than a TDi.

As James has said above. The 300tdi is a great car.

I love mine and it's my only car, but a TD5 will probably offer that extra bit of comfort.

Great engine tone and more tuneable.
