Hi can anyone help? I’ve had a search through the web site but not really found any definite answers.
I’m having a problem with my 54plate Freelander TD4 with 44,000miles. Basically it all started after having 2 new tyres fitted to the front.
I had owned the car for about 5 months before fitting the tyres and had no problems at all.
However after fitting the tyres it developed a very bad vibration through the whole car! Can only describe it as if a wheel was about to fall off!! (Vibration was not felt through steering though!) It was diagnosed as a faulty VCU. So the prop was taken off till a new one was sourced. I probably covered about 200miles with the vibration before the prop was removed, could it have damaged anything else to cause these problems??
Once the prop was removed there was still a very faint vibration felt through the car, so got the garage to check balance of all wheels, they said all was fine!!
Got the prop fitted and there was still a vibration there although not nearly as bad as it was before. I have taken it back to the garage a couple times and they seem to be stumped as to what the problem is. They have checked the obvious ie driveshafts, bushes, mounts etc.
There was also an off side driveshaft seal replaced not long after I bought the car.
Without going to the expense of fitting a new transfer box or gearbox and finding it’s not the problem , can anybody shed any light on what it could be??? Or what and how to check anything else??
The vibration is very faint at 30mph and is more obvious between 65 and 70 mph, there is no vibration at any other speeds, apart from a very slight shake from the gear stick. Probably covered about 3000miles since getting the VCU replaced and the vibration has got no worse.
Hope to get replies to all related problems and I can print this thread off and take to the garage
Thanks

what does yo handbook say about fitting new tyres?

to the front or back?

Didn't get a handbook with it, just went with what the tyre fitting center said. Although looks like they are wrong!!!

Right quick update,

Changed front wheels to back today, and the vibration has almost totaly gone!! still a wee bit between 65 and 70 but nothing at all anywhere else!
I'm guessing this could be caused by the front left and front right tyre being slightly differant tread depth, only talking about 2-3mm differance max but do you think this is what could be causing the remaining vibration??

Thanks for your help so far
