pre heater light is on, fuel pump seems to be working overtime =[ anyone help im stranded at home! and need to collect relatives urgently!!!

if its frozen you can boil a kettle to pour on the fuel lines......or put a couple of litres of petrol in it to thin it down..

How cold is it where you are? If it's down to around -15 it's possible diesel freezing, altough I have had mine down to below -20 and started straight away after standing for a few days.

It's not something to do with the imobiliser is it. Do you have a good battery in your fob?

right ive had my fuel filter off and pump running slow start then blew fuel through no problem put it back on bled it up the pump has returned back to hard work noise scared of knackering it up. is the engine liable to be frozen with the fuel lines.

I had the same problem with my defender when I'd parked it in a very exposed spot at work. I simply waited for daylight and a slightly raised temperature to get her going then I went straight to the garage and put in 5 litres of unleaded and filled the tank to the top. 5 litres in an 80 litre tank gives you a mix of about 6·25% which has been perfect for me so far. Some days later I topped up the tank from about half full so she's probably sitting at about 3% or 4% mix just now and the noisey pump syndrome of thickened diesel has never returned, my pump was only a couple of weeks old when it happened and like you I was worried for it as it sounded fierce!

i think it purges the air from the fuel pressure regulator in the position your describing

its purging alot of air then..... =/ can anyone confirm this is the purgement place for air from the system?

Just had same with mine. always starts first time, now cold weather is here i've been letting the lights on dash all go out before starting. this morning bit of a weak turnover and would not start, did'nt want to over do it in case i ****ed the battery, jumped from spare battery and the same, jumped from my running vito van and started as normal, and yes the battery is ok its two weeks old and the highest power rated .
confused ??

if the belt isnt tight enough then its possible or something draing battery, test alternator, using a multimeter it should be around 14 volts with engine running

Another thing you could do which is a right pain in the arse drain the rad and fill with very hot water not boiling thou may crack something this will heat the engine a little and will be easier to start. My starter motor was frozen on Sunday morning hot water from tap, jug over starter motor and away she went
