I have an X-Reg (2000) Freelander TD4 that has developed yet another fault!
My sister's wedding was up in Dumfries and so had to drive the Freelander from SE London up to Scotland with 5 people onboard.
Prior to leaving I noticed that one of the tyres (OSF) was a mismatch Michelin and the rest were Kumho's.
As the OSF Michelin was worn I got my local LR garage to replace with a Kumho, swap the front and rear tyres round, balance them all and do the tracking.
All was thus pretty much fine on the way up. If anything I would say that the problem started as we neared the end of our journey up.
That changed on the way back... basically at around 30 miles an hour there is a whine that I cannot tie down to the front or back... this whine increases in pitch up to around 50/60 when it becomes almost imperceptible.
After 70 miles an hour if you try to maintain a speed, say 80 the vehicle vibrates your teeth out. However, the vibration dies right off if the vehicle is put UNDER LOAD (either accelerating or decelerating).
Taking it back to my local garage it has cost me around £90 to diagnose and they reckon the whine is coming from the IDS (OMG!!) but cannot be sure if replacing this will stop the vibration at +70.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Having read some threads it seems that mismatched tyres on the front of a pre-2002 Freelander is a really BAD thing and can cause the IDS to fail prematurely.
Just seems such a coincidence that I had the tyres swapped round and the tracking done and it has all gone to pot!

FYI - I appears I also have a relay playing up that brings the traction control light on intermittently (moreso at startup accompanied with a mad-wasp buzzing noise from the relay box in the engine bay), an issue with the subframe coming away and needing welding and a clonk noise that is ONLY heard intermittently when going round a left-hand corner. Maybe either of these could contribute to the issue?
